Lightbulb Highest Paid Players = No WS Rings

Very interesting!

http://www1.reporter-news.com/abil/s...647978,00.html

Quote:
Of the 15 highest paid-players in baseball, Hampton and the Yankees’ Kevin Brown have been traded since signing their original deals, while Rodriguez, Ramirez, the Cubs’ Sammy Sosa and Toronto’s Carlos Delgado have been rumored to be on the block at one time or another.

And of those same top 15, only Jeter, Giambi, Mussina and the Giants’ Barry Bonds have appeared in the World Series after signing their mega-deal. None has won the World Series. Five of the teams (Texas, Los Angeles, Colorado, the Chicago Cubs and Toronto) have experienced losing seasons since signing players to huge deals.

I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

He's slicing like mad to make the numbers work - and you know? they don't work, nor should we expect them too. Because the percentage of players who sign contracts who are in the world series OUGHT to be small. since only about 7 percent of players make it to the WS, that 4 of 15 (27%) made the WS is rather imp-ressive that paying $$ actually is a good thing - even given his tortured math.

And of course, his math is worse than what he puts out - over half the people in the USA Today top 25 have been in the playoffs recently. And almost all of them have been in the playoffs at one point or another over the past ten years. And it's absurd to state that Jeter hasn't 'won' a a WS just because he re-upped after the Yankee's last win. Or if not absurd, than completely uniformative. http://asp.usatoday.com/sports/baseb...aspx?year=2003

And the players who haven't recently - including ARod, include people who were injured (Belle and Dreifort for example) and hardly can be counted against his silly hypothesis that spending money on salaries is 'bad' for your chances.

Bleah, just another sportswrite on puppet strings wailing about the greed of players and stating that 'fiscal sanity' = money in owner's pockets as vs. 'Fiscal Insanity'=money in players pockets. This tune is an old one and as interesting as your local piano bar performer's rendition of 'Feelings.'

I'm with Elmo on this - I think it's a case of choosing the angle for an article, then working the numbers to make them fit.

This is one of those gooy attempts by someone who has an opinion and then goes out to find the evidence to support it. Wouldn't be surprised if this conjecture has some legs to it as it makes a good sound bite.

Red face lists like these are irrelevant..

Maybe they could provide a list of the lowest paid players who have won a World Series after signing their record low contracts.
