Interesting - there's a line in here that says McGriff is strictly on showcase with TB: http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/ne...news&fext=.jsp

I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

Have you read The Baseball Same Game?

Is anyone else flabbergasted that no one has taken a flyer on McGriff yet? There are at least 10 teams that could use him at 1b and/or DH.

Is Fred actively pursuing a job? Anyone know?

He should go play with Rickey on the Newark Bears, I think.

Most GMs probably feel like I do, that McGriff has nothing left.

Yeah, sure, but say you're Anaheim, with Salmon, Anderson, Guillen, and Erstad on the DL, and you're still in a position to win the division. Don't you at least take a look at the guy? He's not going to be expensive at this point.

He's 40. So what? The guy hit 30 HR in 2002. He didn't necessarily lose all of that power in one injury-riddled season in Dodger Stadium. It's an open question, at least.

I'd like to see the A's take a flyer on him -- I'd wager he could be more productive than a Hatteberg/Karros platoon. Won't happen, because they've got too much money invested in Hatteberg to bench him, but I'd like to see it.

If Julio Franco is doing fine being 46 years old why not Mcgriff can do it with 40. In fact some people as Peter Gammons thinks that Galarraga, 42 years old, can play again.
About teams, Anaheim, Pirates and Braves can use him.

Surely McGriff can hit into fewer double plays than JT Snow?

Yes, yes, the Giants would be a great fit. Only argument against it might ne the 1b is a place to play Pedro Feliz regularly. But if they've not settled on a position for him yet, Crime Dog would look very good standing at 1b.

The other thing is that Galarraga may have dibs on the ancient 1b slot on the Giants once he's fully recoved from the cancer recurrence.

how sad is it that the giants need to find space to play Feliz regularly...

McGriff has signed with Tampa's AAA squad, with the idea that after he plays a few times down there to get game-tough, he'll be recalled to the big club and help their woeful offense score some runs. Management is implying he'll get every opportunity to get to his HR milestone.

Tampa will still stink. And what about Tino? Are they going to just give up on Huff? What about Fick? Does anyone care?

Tino's having a nice season so far. Huff will continue to get PT; they have to, between his talent and his contract. He's good; he'll snap out of it.

Fick -- batting .154 -- is the odd man out; he'll probably be released or some other such condign fate.

I meant about Tampa Bay - and the Tampa fans about the D-Rays.

And I think it's better to stink with younger players than to stink with old fogies.

I saw Fred in his first game back.

Gruesome.

All the bat speed of the Tin Woodsman.

Mind you, it was just one game, etc. etc. etc., but the non-fan I was at the game with was deeply disappointed that the guy I'd made sure to point out to her was remarkably stiff-like.

McGriff was called up to the D-Rays today. He went 5 for 20 with one home run on his brief minor league assignment. Pinella says he will be the everyday DH. Fick's out of a job.
