Question Fred McGriff - Free Agent

http://www.mcall.com/sports/all-wake...all-sports-hed

Quote:
The team that signs free-agent first baseman Fred McGriff also can acquire, for a small sum, a countdown sign constructed last season by the Los Angeles Dodgers' marketing department in the hope that the first baseman would hit his 500th homer.

Injuries derailed much of McGriff's season. He finished with a career-low 13 homers, leaving him at 491. The wood sign that read ''Countdown to History'' never made it to its intended destination on a bullpen wall at Dodger Stadium and now rests underneath the stadium.

Dan Brewster, the Dodgers' manager of special events, hopes McGriff, 40, winds up with a team sporting a blue uniform because the sign is blue.

''I'm waiting for the call,'' he told ESPN.com. ''All they'd have to do is pay for shipping.''

Don't hold your breath waiting for the phone to ring Dan...........

.........karma for Crime Dog for milking that trade in 2001 for more money?

Ol' Dan may get that Maytag repairman feeling waiting for a call about that sign.

As far as the Crime Dog goes I am not hearing a peep from anyone about him.

I did a google news search and came up with nothing on McGriff - rumors, that is.

Think about it - he's a 1B or DH. He could be a PH - but, no one is going to pay more than $500,000 for a PH and he's not going to sign for that.

So, who needs a 1B or DH?

Maybe the Twins - but, they don't sign FAs. The Indians? They're rebuilding. The Braves could use him. But, he's been there before and they have $ issues. The Pirates? No money. The Brewers? Same as the Indians.

Best case that Crime Dog has is to stay in shape and hope that someone like Giambi, David Ortiz, or Jim Thome has a season ending injury in ST - - and then beg for a tryout.

As bad as the Dodgers are you would think they would give him a shot. You don't suppose they think the sign is worth more than he is do you??

They have Giles in the OF. You know Long is going to play in the OF - he gets paid too much to sit him. Then you have Nevin and Klesko - - one will end up at 1B, no? So, why would they need McGriff?

Who do the Braves have as the lefty platoon at 1b?
McGriff can probably be better than Fick was.

And, as old as Fred is, he's younger than Julio!

But, the Braves have a hot shot 1B prospect in LaRoche (sic?). And, he bats LH, IIRC.

my point is that salary will not be a large factor in long's playing time. lack of a better option may be, esp cause giles doesn't want to play cf

I see McGriff as a mid-season pickup for someone. I don't really expect he'll be on anopening day roster
