ESPN also speculating a Yankee deal for Erstad and giving up a decent package in return. Thoughts on that?

Dec. 11: Moises Alou's name is out there as are Cliff Floyd and Rondell White, but the name that has now surfaced as the Yankees look to fill their vacancy in left field and also the leadoff spot in their batting order is Erstad. The New York Times reports the Yankees are considering trading Orlando Hernández and minor-league pitchers Alex Graman and Brandon Claussen to the Angels for Erstad, who after leading the majors with 240 hits while batting .355 in 2000 slumped to a .258 average in 2001. The Yankees, however, are reportedly reluctant to deal the left-handed Claussen, who is considered to be the best pitching prospect in their organization. The Giants are also desperate to get a center fielder and may pursue Erstad if they fail to re-sign Barry Bonds.

Hate to see Brandon Claussen go.

Anyone hear Jerome screaming last night around 7 PM on this?

But, you have to give something to get something.

I think Erstad would be a mistake. His 2000 was more of a fluke, taking his 1999 and 2001 season.

I'd say deal Orlando Hernandez, but a LHP prospect is a valuable commodity. No coincidence the multi-team chase for Boomer (Wells).

Darin Erstad is a CF-er, so I guess he can be switched to either LF or RF, since Shane Spencer can cover both (very athletic, RF part of Derek's "shovel pass" in ALDS; LF part of catching sac fly then throwing out 3B runner).

I think Darin's BA slipped in 2001 (.258) from his career BA (.293). I don't know about leadoff, since Jeter's 2001 season was a .377 OBP to Darin's .331, and Jeter has 27 SB's out of 30 (90%), where Erstad has 24 of 34 (70.59%).

I still prefer Sheffield, but the Dodgers seem to want everything in return.

May be moot.

Jayson Stark reports that Yanks have agreed to a two-year, $10 million deal with Rondell White, with a physical still pending. The official announcement is not expected until next week. White hit .307 for the Cubs last season.

2000 may have been the high end for him - - but, last year's stats have two interesting stories for me:

1. At the break, he was on pace for a 14-85-.280 season, and then in the 2nd half, he hit the skids. Could have been an injury that he was masking?

2. Really, LHP killed his numbers last year. In 196 AB v. LHP, he hit .204 and had an OPS of .559 - - - so, maybe on a team like NY, who has a Spencer and/or Williams to give him a blow on the LHP, his numbers won't look so bad?

Yup. God, why do they let him on the air? It was an embarrassment to the human race. Really, I think letting him on the air - - which they do for laughs - - is the same as making fun of someone with downs syndrome. They should realize the guy has a problem and treat him as such, IMHO.

Question

Skip, why don't you call in to WFAN then? If you've got a good speaking voice, why not?

I don't need the fan - - I have this board, which hopefully will be free of the Jerome types.

Just a thought. I figured someone who knows what they're doing, even if someone else. Through limited listening, I've gotten the impression that FAN isn't the most Yankee-happy place on the airwaves, so Jerome may not be a coincidence, since he gives fodder to jokes about the "typical Yankee".

Anyway, that's enough stuff not directly related for one day.

Too bad this is - - - then, again, probably better off that it is.

Back to Erstad, I'd be real careful about him. I think he's injury prone and not as good as 2000.

He probably needs to turn his dial down a notch - - he seems to one of those guys that goes too hard - - perhaps?
