On the field, in the community and at ground zero, Curt Schilling made a difference in 2001

Watching Curt Schilling in action at the opening of the Hard Rock Cafe in Washington, D.C., 12 years ago, no one would have looked at him and said, "There goes a future Sportsman of the Year."

Schilling, then 23, had pitched only nine games with the Orioles, but that didn't stop him from careening through the Hard Rock, frantically trying to meet Miss Washington D.C. "I hear you're a knucklehead," one woman told him. Schilling considered the thought for as long as his attention span would allow -- approximately 1.6 seconds in those days -- then responded with a goofy grin, "You're right. I am."
