I think Hornsby edges Cravath...barely. With Heine Groh and George Burns close behind. Edd Roush had a good year as did Benny Kauff.
In think I still go with Alexander this year by quite a margin. Fred Toney had a fine year, but I think Hippo Vaughn and Ferdie Schupp had better years than he. Vaughn was a heckuva pitcher from 1914-1920. |

Win Shares leaders, players: Rogers Hornsby (St. Louis) 38, Heinie Groh (Cincinnati) 37, George Burns (New York) 34, Edd Roush (Cincinnati) and Benny Kauff (New York) 30, Art Fletcher (New York) 27, Heinie Zimmerman (New York) and Gavy Cravath (Philadelphia) 26.
WS leaders, pitchers: Pete Alexander (Philadelphia) 40, Hippo Vaughn (Chicago) 24, Ferdie Schupp (New York) 23, Wilbur Cooper (Pittsburgh) 22. WARP3: Hornsby 8.3, Groh 9.8, Burns 8.4, Roush 6.3, Kauff 6.3, Fletcher 8.3, Zimmerman 6.7, Cravath 5.6. Alexander 10.3, Vaughn 6.6, Schupp 5.7 (his career year), Cooper 6.4. Best player: Heinie Groh. Groh led in hits, doubles, and times on base, and played a terrific 3B. Hornsby was the best overall hitter, but Groh was the best player in the league this year. Giants had four candidates in their pennant year but no one to swipe the award. Best pitcher: Pete Alexander, in the third of his three 30-win seasons. No one else comes close. |

Best Hitter: Rogers Hornsby
Played SS and led the league in OPS+, SLG% and was second in BA adn OBP. Best Pitcher: Grover Cleveleand Alexander Alexander led the league in Wins and Inning and finished second in ERA+ to Anderson who pitched fewer innings. Anderson was effective in a limited number of innings but Alexander was better. |
