For the season referenced in the subject line of this thread, who would be your pick for Best Positional Player (Include defense and position played in your determination), Best Pitcher, Best First Year Player and any other topics of discussion from this season.

Best Hitter: Fred Lynn
Lynn had one of the best rookie seasons ever. maybury was probably his equal at the plate but Lynn's defense at a tough defensive position carries him to the title. He finished 2nd in BA, 5th in OBP and 1st in SLG%. Best Pitcher: Jim Palmer Palmer finished with a 23-11 record and had an ERA+ of 169. Catfish Hunter had one of the best year of his career but it wasn't enough to surpass Palmer. Best Rookie: Fred Lynn Lynn wins in a landslide over teammate Jim Rice. |

hitter - pretty close between Mayberry and Lynn - I'd have to go Lynn too (yes, Lynn was better than Rice - but very few years would Rice's year NOT have been the ROY).
Pitcher - I have to agree with Palmer. Catfish had a good year as did a young Frank Tanana who was great for a bad Angels team. |

You can make a case for Singleton, Mayberry, or Carew for MVP. Different metrics show them outperforming Lynn, depending on where you look. However , if you include the nebulous "impact," it's Fred Lynn for a landslide. Lynn was also the best rookie.
Jim Palmer was the best pitcher. Not really close there, although there were other good years. |
