Is there something going on in the Bronx? Pettite went home to Houston and Clemens left the team in such a way they get no compensation now that he's in Houston, too. (That couldn't have been an accident... could it?)
Zimmer left about 30 seconds after the World Series ended. Torre seems ready to go and Cashman wants out. Is the relative harmony of the Torre years coming to a halt or is this just the usual goings on about town? |

To me, it comes down to something very simple. When you are winning a world series every year it is easy to put up with Steinbrenner's garbage. When you don't, you can't stand it. George needs to realize that he should talk with his wallet and leave the baseball decisions to baseball people. Then maybe Pettite would be a Yankee, Roger would be a full time dad, and a life long baseball man like Zim would've been treated like he deserved to be.

As for Pettite and Clemens, I can easily understand wanting to go home to play.
Zimmer and Steinbrenner had problems in 2003, it was clear he was leaving. Torre and Cashman have 2 reasons to want to leave, I think. 1) What more can they prove in NY? 2) George. |

Joe Torre just finished his 8th year under Steinbrenner, which makes him the longest tenured manager in Steinbrenner Yankee history. TWOFOLD! Showalter did 4 years prior-the 2nd longest. Billy Martin, in 5 stints as Yankee skipper, didn't TOTAL 8 years. This has GOT TO BE wearing thin on both. They are tired of each other. But, the money is too good for Torre to step down & the backlash would be too severe for Steinbrenner to fire Torre. So they have to live w/ each other one more year. But the drawing power of the Yankees to free agents has dwindled dramatically. And w/o slam-dunk talent, Torre doesn't have the ability to reach the apex.
