Best Hitter: Ty Cobb
Get used to his name in this slot. Sam Crawford was a close second.

Best Pitcher: Ed Walsh
40 wins and a 1.42 ERA in 464 innings. Addie Joss, Cy Young and Ed Summers were all very good that year too.

Yeah Cobb certainly, Crawford and Lajoie had pretty good years, but other than that not much there.

Joss was probably better than Walsh IMO, but Walsh's 49 starts were 12 more than the next pitcher. Slightly better K/rates than Joss, but all the other stats Joss was better. But you don't throw out the countables, you just weight them. I wouldn't argue about either.

No reason to even run the numbers here.

Best Player: Ty Cobb, leader in average, slugging, OPS, hits, doubles, triples, RBI, and OPS+. Other players had good years, including Cobb's teammates Matty McIntyre and Sam Crawford, and Doc Gessler of Boston, but none approached Cobb.

Best Pitcher: Ed Walsh runs away from all competition. 40 wins when the next best was 24, and leading with 6 saves to boot. Addie Joss, Rube Waddell, and Cy Young had good years, but Walsh was superhuman in 1908.

Best rookie: I will venture to say Gavy Cravath, .256 with 11 triples in 94 games for Boston. A 136 OPS+.

This was one of the great pennant races of all time, with the Tigers, Cleveland and the White Sox going down to the wire.
