Best Batter: Carl Yastrzemski
Yaz wins it but not by as much as I thought. Killebrew had a good year as did Kaline. Frank Robbinson also had a good year. But I guess if you win the Triple crown then that should count for something.

Best Pitcher: Joe Horlen
I had never heard of him before today but he lead the league in ERA+ and his 19-7 record was the second best winning percentage in the league.

Jim Lonborg was the Cy Young award winner that year but Horlen had much superior stats. I guess because the Red Sox won and Lonborg won 20 games that he got the nod.

Best Rookie: Rod Carew
Carew started off his HOF career with a stellar season. Underrated Reggie Smith also had a very good year.

Carl Yastrzemski (Boston) 42, Harmon Killebrew (Minnesota) 38, Frank Robinson (Baltimore), Bill Freehan and Al Kaline (both Detroit) 30 each, Jim Fregosi and Don Mincher (California) and Frank Howard (Washington) 28 each, Dick McAuliffe (Detroit) 27, Tony Oliva (Minnesota) and Mickey Mantle (New York) 25.

For pitchers, Joel Horlen (Chicago) 23, Gary Peters (Chicago) 21, Dean Chance (Minnesota) 20, Jim Lonborg (Boston) and Jim Merritt (Minnesota) 19, Earl Wilson (Detroit) 18.

WARP3 scores; Yaz 12.4, Killebrew 11.4, Robinson 9.2, Freehan 9.0, Kaline 9.8, Fregosi 6.8, Mincher 6.9, Howard 7.3, McAuliffe 7.4, Oliva 7.1, Mantle 5.7. Also Horlen 9.2, Peters 7.8, Chance 6.2, Lonborg 6.0, Merritt 6.5, Wilson 6.4.

Yaz was without a doubt the top player. He was also clutch down the stretch, with 22 hits in his last 44 ABs when the Red Sox simply had to win. Lonborg was the wins leader, but not the best pitcher. ERA leader Horlen, a not-too-shabby 19-7 himself, was the best pitcher this year.

Top rookie to Rod Carew, with honorable mention to a contribution to the winners from Reggie Smith. But the Twins were in it to the wire, too.
