It struck me that there is room for debate on this issue. In honor of the life of Warren Spahn, here are the men I feel have some claim to the title: vote for the one you think is the best LHP of all time.

No one else had more than one. This vote is for Grove.

I voted for the Unit. No offense to Lefty Grove, but I've never seen him pitch in my life and I've actually witnessed how ridiculously dominant Randy is. Johnson is probably a modern-day Grove, and I think there are times where he's better.
Of course, I just like Randy. But I honestly believe he's the best lefty of all time right now. |

Grove just has too many numbers racked up for anyone else to compare, regardless of era, etc.

Yeah, it's Grove, and it's not even close.

What Tgwynn said. This isn't close. Just about anyway you want to slice the pie it will come up Grove. He had the whole package. Longevity and dominance.

I'm Spahnie's biggest fan. No one ate up innings better than Spahn, ever. But when it comes to quality innings, preventing runs, year after year after year -- no one comes close. Not Pedro, not Cy Young, not Walter OR Randy Johnson, not Clemens (okay -- some of these guys come close). And we're not talking about preventing runs part-time either, like Pedro, but with full-time innings.
Check out "Number of times leading league in ERA", "Number of times leading league in ERA+", and "Number of times in top-3" in both categories. That would be Grove. Only Walter Johnson's closeness in this category and huge lead in innings makes him arguably Number One of all time. Give Lefty the years he spent in Baltimore before turning 25, it would be a better race for Number One. Last edited by Ytown Tribe fan : 12-10-2003 at 04:18 PM. |
