Default Major trade and big trade rumors

1) The Expos traded P Javier Vazquez to the Yankees for 1B Nick Johnson, OF Juan Rivera and P Randy Choate.

This is get a top of the line young pitcher (age 27) for a potentially top of the line hitter (age 25) deal.

After 3.42 ERA/31 RSAA and 3.91 ERA/6 RSAA seasons, Vazquez had an excellent 3.24 ERA/48 RSAA in 34 starts. He has a 4.16 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.36, and 52 RSAA in 192 games.

Vazquez's career ERA/RSAA figures are brought down by a disastrous start to his career. Over the past 4 years, he's had 3.65 ERA/99 RSAA and ranks 7th in the majors in RSAA during that time--

Code:
RSAA 1 Pedro Martinez 205 2 Randy Johnson 184 3 Curt Schilling 139 4 Tim Hudson 123 5 Greg Maddux 119 6 Barry Zito 112 7 Javier Vazquez 99 8 Kevin Brown 89 T9 Mike Mussina 87 T9 Bartolo Colon 87

After starting his career with -5 RCAA/.621 OPS (23 G) and -3 RCAA/.749 OPS (129 G) seasons, Johnson hit .472 SLG, .422 OBA, .894 OPS, 24 RCAA in 96 games. To go along with his .422 OBA in 2003, Johnson also had an outstanding minor league track record and, if he is able to overcome injury problems that have plagued him throughout his young career, he is a good bet to be one of the best young hitters in baseball.

Johnson's 406 PA fell short of the 502 needed to qualify for the list, but if he qualified, he would have been 3rd in the AL in OBA--

Code:
OBA 1 Manny Ramirez .427 2 Carlos Delgado .426 3 Jason Giambi .412 4 Edgar Martinez .406 5 Jorge Posada .405 6 Bill Mueller .398 7 Trot Nixon .396 8 Alex Rodriguez .396 9 Doug Mientkiewicz .393 10 Derek Jeter .393

Rivera has -7 RCAA/.729 OPS in 88 career games, including a .468 SLG, .304 OBA, .773 OPS, -2 RCAA in 57 games in 2003.

Choate has a 4.43 ERA/2 RSAA in 82 career games, including a 7.36 ERA/-1 RSAA in 5 games in 2003.

2) According to the Dallas Morning News, the Ranges are willing to make an Alex Rodriguez for Manny Ramirez trade, but the Redsox would have to assume all of Rodriguez's remaining contract and pay "a significant portion" of Ramirez's and "the 'significant' amount of money the Rangers need in return constitutes a huge hurdle."

According to the Forth Star Telegram, if the Redsox are able to trade Nomar Garciaparra, "a deal might be done before the winter meetings start next week in New Orleans." According to the Hartford Courant, a Garciaparra for Kevin Brown rumor is floating around.

3) According to the LA Times, "despite getting Vazquez and pursuing Pettitte, the Yankees are determined to bring Brown to the Bronx because of their payroll battle with the Red Sox.

"Steinbrenner, sources said, views Brown as the perfect replacement for Clemens — an intimidating veteran who works at the front end of a rotation. The Yankees, however, aren't willing to part with All-Star second baseman Alfonso Soriano, believing that Weaver, 27, is a fair swap for Brown, who turns 39 in March, has had a recent history of major injuries and is owed $30 million over the next two years."

4) According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the A's, Mariners, Redsox and Cubs have made offers to free agent P Eddie Guardado and his agent expects a decision by the end of the weekend. According to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, the Twins are expected to make their offer today.

5) The Reds removed "interim" from manager Dave Miley's title.

6) According to the Seattle Times, the Mariners have made a 3 year, $24-25 million offer to free agent SS Miguel Tejada.

7) Cardinals CF Jim Edmonds had shoulder surgery and the team expects him to ready for spring training.

After 47 RCAA/.974 OPS and 54 RCAA/.981 OPS seasons, Edmonds hit .617 SLG, .385 OBA, 1.002 OPS, 42 RCAA in 137 games. He has a .913 career OPS, compared to his league average of .778, and 280 RCAA in 1292 games.

Edmonds ranks 8th in the NL in RCAA over the past 4 years--

Code:
RCAA 1 Barry Bonds 533 2 Todd Helton 290 3 Sammy Sosa 270 T4 Brian Giles 243 T4 Gary Sheffield 243 6 Chipper Jones 209 7 Albert Pujols 206 8 Jim Edmonds 197 9 Luis Gonzalez 189 10 Lance Berkman 188

8) The Cardinals re-signed free agent C Chris Widger to a 1 year, $500,000 contract.

After missing the 2001 season and having a .713 OPS/0 RCAA in 21 games in 2002, Widger hit .324 SLG, .279 OBA, .603 OPS, -8 RCAA in 44 games. He has a .702 career OPS, compared to his league average of .779, and -54 RCAA in 532 games.

9) The Marlins re-signed free agent INF Mike Mordecai to a 1 year contract. Terms were not disclosed, but it's believed to be around the same $500,000 that he received the past couple of years.

After -8 RCAA/.727 OPS and -9 RCAA/.611 OPS seasons, Mordecai had a .326 SLG, .276 OBA, .601 OPS, -4 RCAA in 65 games. He has a .672 career OPS, compared to his league average of .777, and -55 RCAA in 722 games.

10) According to the Chicago Sun Times, the Cubs have had exploratory talks with the Pirates about C Jason Kendall and, if free agent 2B Mark Grudzielanek rejects their offer, they could start discussions for Expos 2B Jose Vidro.

11) Cubs P Mike Remlinger had arthroscopic shoulder surgery shortly after the NLCS.

After 2.76 ERA/14 RSAA and 1.99 ERA/16 RSAA seasons, Remlinger had a 3.65 ERA/4 RSAA in 73 games in his first year with the Cubs. He has a 3.78 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.28, and 43 RSAA in 512 games.

12) According to the Seattle Post Intelligencer, the Mariners have made a 1 year, $4 million offer to free agent CF Mike Cameron.

13) According to Sportsline.com, the Angels are aggressively pursuing free agent P Bartolo Colon.

14) According to the Forth Star Telegram, the Rangers top OF choice is free agent Jose Cruz Jr.

15) The Rangers signed P Todd Williams to a minor league contract, with an invitation to spring training.

Williams has a 5.37 ERA/-7 RSAA in 50 career games and hasn't pitched in the majors since 2001.

16) According to the LA Times, the Whitesox and Dodgers are working on an Odalis Perez for Paul Konerko trade. According to the Chicago Tribune, the Dodgers are more likely to look in another direction, such as a deal for Magglio Ordonez.

17) According to the LA Times, Dodgers GM Paul Evans isn't interested in Konerko, while the A's are interested in a Paul Lo Duca for Jermaine Dye trade.

18) Pirates OF Jason Bay had surgery to repair a torn labrum. The team is hoping that he'll be "close to being ready" by Opening Day and they have him penciled in as the starting LF.

Bay hit .529 SLG, .421 OBA, .949 OPS, 10 RCAA in his first 30 career games (first 3 with the Padres).

He was a ".300 hitter" on a first place team. Giving the bbwaa's goofyness, maybe it's surprising that he didn't more votes than he did.
