For the season referenced in the subject line of this thread, who would be your pick for NL Best Batter, NL Best Pitcher, Best First Year in the NL Player, NL Manager of the Year, and NL Best Comeback Player?
Why?

It makes for remarkable and sincere discourse. |

Best Batter: Wee Willie Keeler
His .424 batting average was 34 points higher than second place. Stole 64 bases too. Best Pitcher: Kid Nichols 31 wins, 2.64 ERA and lead the league in innings pitched. Amos Rusie was good too but didn't pitch nearly as much. Best Rookie (I am going by baseball-reference's debut listing): Jack "Red" Powell Powell went 15-10 for the Cleveland Spiders and had an ERA over 1 run greater than the league average. Best Manager: Frank Selee Puts the BeanEaters back on top after a fourth place finish the year before. Best Comeback: Amos Rusie After not playing in 1896 because of a contract dispute Rusie was one of the best pitchers in 1897. |

Red hot Win Shares!
Pitchers; Kid Nichols (Boston) 41, Ted Breitenstein (Cincinnati) 34, Amos Rusie (New York) 31, Cy Young (Cleveland) 28, Win Mercer (Washington) 27. Players: Willie Keeler (Baltimore) 32, George Davis (New York) 31, Fred Clarke (Louisville) 30, Hughie Jennings (Baltimore) 29, Billy Hamilton (Boston) 28, Joe Kelley (Baltimore) and Jimmy Collins (Boston) 26. I'll agree with the WS and WT on player and pitcher: Keeler and the Kid. I'll use 20-20 hindsight to name Honus Wagner (.338 in 61 games) the rookie of the year. Manager of the Year to Boston's Frank Selee, slipping past the Orioles for the pennant. |
