Unhappy Some People Never Learn

The Baltimore Orioles have signed free-agent outfielder Marty Cordova to a three-year deal worth $9.1 million Tuesday.

Cordova batted .301 with 20 home runs and 69 RBI in 122 games last season for the Cleveland Indians. The seven-year veteran moved into the Indians' lineup in mid-April and made 105 starts, including 75 in left field and 23 in right.

"Marty Cordova is a solid veteran hitter and fielder who will provide more punch to our lineup," said Syd Thrift, the Orioles' vice president for baseball operations. "He proved last year that he has regained his top performance level and he is looking forward to working again with our hitting coach, Terry Crowley, with whom he worked closely and had great success in Minnesota."

Bringing in an outfielder has been one of the Orioles' most pressing needs. The club will not re-sign Brady Anderson Chris Richard will not return to the lineup until next July after undergoing rotator cuff surgery.

Cordova, 32, had a 22-game hitting streak last season, one shy of his career best. He batted .333 (36-108) with seven home runs vs. left-handed pitchers and .289 (87-301) with 13 home runs vs. right-handers.

He signed with Toronto during spring training in 2000 and served as the Blue Jays' fourth outfielder, batting .245 with four homers and 18 RBI in 62 games. He became a free agent after the 2000 season and went to spring training with Cleveland this past season as a non-roster invitee. After batting .442 with two homers and 11 RBI in spring training, he was added to the Indians' roster and re-established himself as an everyday player two weeks into the season.

I'll let Lee and the rest bash away. but all I have to say is that's the way to rebuild, trot in the 32-year olds with mercurial histories.

I think the best irony about the Orioles in recent years has been that their GM's name is Syd Thrift.

What about Brian Ca$hman, who's always accused of buying new players?

Red face

Skip, it was my response to Satchel's "Syd Thrift" post. I'm wondering if the thread stays open or closed.

Or the thread could be retitled, "The more GMs change, the more they do the same stupid stuff."

"Some people never learn" still fits as a moniker, but with no Cam Bonifay, Ed Lynch, or Randy Smith we're running out of easy targets.

Well, there's always the Royals, I guess, and Czar Bud's team.

And anytime Yog's around, it always comes back to the Yankees. You know, I almost wish Ban Johnson didn't move the Orioles from Baltimore after McGraw abandoned the franchise in 1902.

Smed, you're saying I never learn or the Yankees never learn?

As for me, don't spend too much time since that's a dead story. As to the Yanks, w/Smoltz signed in his rightful team, Karsay looking closer to pinstripes than ever, Giambi the only big bucks guy on the horizon, unless they get Sheff or Rolen, I'd say the free spending ways won't be going on forever. By this, I'd say that George has learned.

He's assisting (LaMarr?). He gets to hold the spare gas can in case the first one doesn't put out the fire.

Default Speaking of Cam Bonifay

My parents came down here in March and we were at a Red Sox - Pirates game. I made the comment that I couldn't believe that the Pirates were claiming that they were a small revenue team when they found the cash to throw away at Derek Bell. A female Pirate fan in front of me turned around and said that Derek Bell was one of the 5 best outfielders in the game. And I replied " sure and Cam Bonifay will be executive of the year!"

She probably meant at the game "Chutes and Ladders" - - or perhaps "Candyland"?

You did miss the opt to ask about One through Four. That could have been fun.
