1) The Minnesota Supreme Court refused the Twins and MLB's request for expedited appeal of the injunction preventing the team from being contracted. The Court of Appeals scheduled a hearing on the matter for December 27.
2) The Expos signed their lease to play in Olympic Stadium for the 2002 season, but the deal contains a clause that will allow the team to unilaterally cancel the deal. 3) The Astros re-signed SS Jose Vizcaino to a 1 year, $1.7 million contract. 4) The Rockies released OF Jacob Cruz. 5) The Mets are reportedly close to selling LF Benny Agbayani to the Tokyo Yomiuri Giants and the team will announce the signing of Japanese P Satoru Komiyama today. Komiyama, 36, has a 3.03 ERA in 2001. 6) According to the Cincinnati Post, the Reds and Orioles were close to recently making a trade that would have sent RF Dmitri Young to the Orioles for either P Jason Johnson or Sidney Ponson, with the Reds preferring Ponson and the Orioles preferring to deal Johnson. But, the deal collapsed since both teams were reluctant to make trades before the contraction mess is cleared up. 7) According to the Chicago Tribune, the Cubs are close to re-signing Delino DeShields to a 1 year contract. DeShields would probably then start spring training as the projected starter at 2B, with prospect Bobby Hill possibly ready by the All Star break and fellow free agent Eric Young leaving the team. 8) Yankees MGR Joe Torre has reportedly agreed to a new 3 year, $16 million contract, with Torre saying he expects to sign the contract next week. 9) According to the NY Post, the Yankees plan on offering free agent P John Smoltz a 4 year, $52 million contract. 10) According to NY Newsday, the Yankees offered to trade David Justice to the Mets for Robin Ventura, with the Mets rejecting the deal. 11) According to the New York Post, the Redsox are seriously considering signing free agent LF Moises Alou to a 3 year, $30 million contract and hiring his father, Felipe, as bench coach. 12) According to the NY Daily News, the Mets are interested in BlueJays RF Raul Mondesi and P Billy Koch, while the Pirates seem willing to listen to offers for CF Brian Giles, but the price for him appears to be higher than the Mets are willing to give up. 13) According to the NY Post, the A's "are seriously considering going to seven years for $105 million, and then letting Giambi decide if he wants to leave the A's for the Yankees, who will make an offer early next week." Meanwhile, "The Yankees are mulling two offers to Giambi - one for seven years and $119 million, another for six years at $111 million." There is also speculation that the A's are just raising their offer for show, so they can claim to their fans that they put up a good fight. Lee

According to NY Newsday, the Yankees offered to trade David Justice to the Mets for Robin Ventura, with the Mets rejecting the deal. Funny on the Justice offer - - a friend a work suggested that one-up about 2 weeks ago, and we all said that it really makes perfect sense for both sides. Figures then that the Mets turned it down. ![]() On Smoltz, geez, that YankeesNets thing must really be bring in the dough - - either that or the Big Stein is printing it himself.

Hey, then Felipe could tutor Shea Hillenbrand! What is the record low for walks by a player in, say, 100 games? |

Right off the top of my head, I wanted to say Rob Picciolo - - but then I looked and saw he was still better than Dunston in 199 and Ted Martinez in 1975. The worst all time was Bobby Clark - a catcher with the Angels - - - in 1982, he appeared in 102 games - - and had ZERO walks! Wow.

The former Viking great and NFL HOF'er Alan Page is a member of the Minnesota Supreme Court. Who ever thought a football player would save baseball in Minnesota? At least temporarily. I guess it just shows that a Viking can do something to lower my blood pressure after all.

Well, I guess the best Shea can hope for is to tie that record. Go for it, dude! |
