Which was the better batter in 1889?

This could come down to definitions, but I'll go with Brouthers. The only thing that might even up the edge Brouthers has is park effect. Tiernan played half his game at a batting neutral park while Brouthers parks favored hitters by 6%. The SBE has Brouthers RCAA (which take sinto account park factors) at 79 while Tiernan "only" gets 71. Brouthers also has a higher OWP, .793 to .758.
The only thing that keeps Tiernan in the conversation is that he walked 30 more times than Brouthers. He also made 28 more outs. So if "batting" were defined as swinging at the ball Brouthers wins going away.

I meant "batting" as in total offensive production - - I would have used "hitting" if I only meant swinging.

I think it's Brouthers too. Boomer made the case quite nicely.

Guess I'm the only one picking Mike Tiernan.
![]() TA, RC, BPA, and TB all favor him. It is close between the two, for me.

A lot of Tiernan's advantage was in the parks. This is why Brouthers leads in RCAA.

He leads by 8 RCAA. Not a huge difference. Besides, I think RCAA takes Park Factors into account, no?
