For the season referenced in the subject line of this thread, who would be your pick for NL Best Batter, NL Best Pitcher, Best First Year in the NL Player, NL Manager of the Year, and NL Best Comeback Player?
Why?

National League:
Best Batter: Roger Connor Drove his mates in, helped himself with league-best slugging percent. Best Pitcher: John Clarkson The only starter of note in 1889. Best Rookie: Patsy Tebeau Slick fielder at the hot corner with a solid bat and durability. Best Manager: Jim Hart Relative no-name almost took Beaneaters to pennant in only year there. Best Comeback: Walt Wilmot Was one of NL's best all around hitters after average rookie year. American Association: Best Batter: Tommy Tucker "Foghorn" ended AA career with the best average and the most hits. Best Pitcher: Elton Chamberlain The ambidextrous hurler cruised his way to his best campaign. Best Rookie: Bug Holliday Led the AA in homers as a rookie. Best Manager: Bill Sharsig Made his Athletics competitive for the first time. Best Comeback: Jim Keenan Unexpectedly produced at plate and behind it for Red Stockings. |

Getcher red hot Win Shares here!
NL Pitchers; John Clarkson (Boston) 60, Charlie Buffinton (Philadelphia) 33, Mickey Welch (New York) 31, Henry Boyle (Indianapolis) and Ben Sanders (Philadephia) 28 each. NL Position players; Dan Brouthers (Boston) and Mike Tiernan (New York) 28, Jack Glasscock (Indianapolis) 27, Roger Connor (New York) 26, Hardy Richardson (Boston) and Jimmy Ryan (Chicago) 25 each. Clarkson nearly doubled up everybody in Win Shares, leading with 620 innings which was 200 more than anyone else. It was an astounding season, and by far the best of the year. I'll pick Dan Brouthers for top player, although Fred Carroll's lead in OBA and OPS is tempting. But as a catcher (and outfielder) Fred played less. Amos Rusie had a lousy rookie season, but would become the best of the lot. AA Pitchers; Bob Caruthers (Brooklyn, sending Caruthers back to the mound full-time) 46, Matt Kilroy (Baltimore) and Silver King (St. Louis) 44 each, Elton Chamberlain (St. Louis) 42, Jesse Duryea (Cincinnati) 37. AA Position players; Tommy Tucker (Baltimore) and Darby O'Brien (Brooklyn) 30 each, Harry Stovey (Philadelphia) 28, Billy Shindle (Baltimore) and Tip O'Neill (St. Louis) 27 each, Oyster Burns (Brooklyn) and Denny Lyons (Philadelphia) 25 each. Jack Stivetts was the AA's best pitcher on a per-game basis, but did not pitch that much. This is a tough pick. I'll choose Kilroy as best pitcher, and give Duryea the consolation prize as Rookie of the Year. For player I'll go with Tucker, the on-base machine of 1889. |

John Clarkson and Mike Tiernan were the NPOTY for 1889. I'll go with them, where applicable. Others to follow.

Best Batter: Dan Brouthers
Another good year from one of the early stars. A case could be made for Roger Conner also. Best Pitcher: John Clarkson No contest. 49-19 with a 2.73 ERA. Best Manager: Jim Hart Led the Beaneaters to a much improved finish. |
