For the season referenced in the subject line of this thread, who would be your pick for NL Best Batter, NL Best Pitcher, Best First Year in the NL Player, NL Manager of the Year, and NL Best Comeback Player?
Why?

My picks: Charlie Buffinton and Jimmy Ryan were the NPOTY for 1888. I'll go with them, where applicable. Others to follow.

La la la...
National League: Best Batter: Cap Anson Tightest race in league history so far for award goes to the hit leader. Best Pitcher: Tim Keefe Another close race, but he won the triple crown so has advantage. Best Rookie: Ben Sanders Threw league-leading 8 shutouts in 19-10 debut campaign. Best Manager: Jim Mutrie Gave the Giants their first National League championship. Best Comeback: Dick Johnston Had only career good season by improving extra-base output. American Association: Best Batter: John Reilly Fluke season resulted in second best average and 55 extra-base hits. Best Pitcher: Silver King 45 wins, ERA half of the league average, and a catchy name to boot. Best Rookie: Mickey Hughes Only good campaign helped Brooklyn flirt with a league title. Best Manager: Bill McGunnigle Engineered 28-win improvement with the Bridegrooms. Best Comeback: Hub Collins Had successful year as an OF that led to stint as Bridegroom 2B. |

The WS data:
NL Pitchers; Charlie Buffinton (Philadelphia) 44, Ben Sanders (Philadelphia) and Tim Keefe (New York) 35 each, Ed Morris (Pittsburgh) 34, John Clarkson (Boston) and Mickey Welch (New York) 32 each. NL Position Players; Jimmy Ryan (Chicago) 34, Roger Connor (New York) 32, Cap Anson (Chicago) 29, Dummy Hoy (Washington) 28, Dan Brouthers (Detroit) and Buck Ewing (New York) 27 each. I'll take Keefe for top pitcher. I'm not sure how Buffinton gets the WS lead instead. For position guys, I will go with the WS in a close race and pick Jimmy Ryan, center fielder of the second-place Chicago team. Top rookie is Sanders, with a fine debut in Philly as the #2 pitcher. AA Pitchers; Silver King (St. Louis) 71, Bob Caruthers (P-OF, Brooklyn) 46, Ed Seward (Philadelphia) 44, Nat Hudson (St. Louis) 36. AA Position players; Dave Foutz (RF-P, Broklyn) 33, Harry Stovey (Philadelphia) and Tip O'Neill (St. Louis) 28 each, John Reilly (Cincinnati) Ed McKean (Cleveland) and Curt Welch (Philadelphia) 25 each. Cincy 1B Long John Reilly gets my vote, along with Silver King, although Ed Seward pitched very well. Mickey Hughes had the best rookie year, although Billy Hamilton would become the better player. |

Best Batter: Jimmy Ryan
In a very close race Ryan gets the nod over Conner, Anson, Brouthers and Kelly. He had 60 sb in addition to his great hitting stats and even went 4-0 on the mound. Best Pitcher: Tim Keefe 35-12 with a league leading ERA. A little better than Ben Sanders Best Manager: Jim Mutrie Led the Giants to the WS after finishing 4th the previous year. |
