Just off the top of my head Steve and going with the Bill James idea of

Definition A Hall of Famer: Arguably one of the best players of all time or at least at his position
Definition B: Clearly one of the best players of his time by position
Definition C: Consistently among the better players of his time (by position
Definition D: Consistently a better than average player at his position

Bert Blyleven C
Gary Carter B
Dave Concepcion B
Andre Dawson C
Lenny Dykstra C
Steve Garvey B
Rich Gossage B
Mike Greenwell C
Ron Guidry B
Mike Henneman D
Keith Hernandez B
Tommy John C
Jim Kaat C
Don Mattingly B
Jack Morris B
Dale Murphy B
Dave Parker B
Jim Rice C
Jeff Russell D
Scott Sanderson D
Ozzie Smith A
Dave Stewart B
Bruce Sutter B
Robby Thompson D
Luis Tiant B
Alan Trammell B
Frank Viola D
Tim Wallach D

I'd have to look up these guys to make a more intelligent assessment and I don't have time at the moment.

How can you pass on Keith Hernandez? That is inexcusable.

Except for Murph, I agree. At his peak, there was no one better. But he hung around too long.

I wouldn't be surprised if Trammell got neglected.

I'll take Blyleven, Carter, Dawson, Gossage, John, Kaat, Ozzie, Sutter, Tiant, and Trammell.

Remember, the rules say only vote for 10!

He was one of the Top Ten hitters when he played - - - see below. But, the problem is, he only played for 11 seasons, basically. He got old - real fast. The Lounge Life will do that to you.

1 George Brett .719
2 Mike Schmidt .715
3 Eddie Murray .687
4 Rod Carew .672
5 Keith Hernandez .669
6 Jack Clark .665
7 Dave Winfield .649
8 Dwight Evans .641
9 Jose Cruz .641

Default Who The He** Is Jeff Russell

Who the he** is Jeff Russell. I go to 50 or 60 games a year in Minneapolis, Milwaukee, K.C. & Chicago, & probably catch upwards of 300 games on the tube each year. I even spent the last several minutes looking at this guys stats and I am still absolutely clueless as to who he is. It looks like he had several good seasons in the late 80's & early 90's including being a Rolaids Relief winner (perhaps the most overrated award in baseball) in 1989. Is it just me or what.

Another quick rant, how do guys like Russell, Lenny Dykstra, Jeff King, Robby Thompson & Scott Sanderson even get on the HOF ballot. Arguments can be made either way for players like Andre Dawson, Gary Carter, Jack Morris, Jim Kaat & Bert Blyleven(my favorite player ever)but I know of no one supporting Tim Wallach's candidacy into baseball immortality.

He played 12 and if you add the pieces of other seasons, it is more like 14. He won a batting title (when it counted) and was a MVP, not to mention how many gold gloves. The guy is totally deserving.

Everyone's eligible that's had 10 or more years in the bigs, and has been retired for at least 5.

Jim Deshaies even got a vote last year! Don't know if his website (www.putjdinthehall.com ) is still up.

According to baseball-reference.com:

Similar Batters
Mark Grace (943)
Wally Joyner (911)
Hal McRae (907)
Joe Kuhel (900)
Ken Griffey Sr. (896)
Chris Chambliss (883)
Cecil Cooper (882)
Jose Cruz (875)
Joe Judge (872)
Cesar Cedeno (870)

Would you put Mark Grace in? He has a great glove at 1B too?
