How about both or neither?

It will probably be neither. Both deals require them to take on around $20 mill a year in payroll (figure A-Rod minus Nomar's $ and Schilling plus Mantei in the other rumored deal). Unless Manny goes, do the Sox have and extra $20 mill to add on in 2004? Probably not.

I'm guessing "neither."

To play devil's advocate, though... if Texas took Manny, Boston would take A-Rod. Highly unlikely, though.

I'll take neither. But, given the choice between the two, I'll go with the Schilling deal being less unlikely than the Rodriguez deal.

The Schilling deal probably has more upside for the Sox than the Rodriguez deal. The Schilling thing would be over in three years with a definite improvement in the team. An ARod deal would run another 7-8 years and ARod is not that much of an improvement over Nomar.

But the Red Sox don't have much to offer that other people want that they would be willing to let go. Even if they could unload Manny for Schilling and Mantei ( a salary push) they would then have to "buy" a corner outfielder.

I don't think either is very likely

Like I said ARod is not that much of an improvement over Nomar. You don't think with $10M+ salary differential I can't replace 15 runs??
