Here is an article from ESPN regarding efforts in MLB to start a Baseball World Cup, similar in format to the FIFA World Cup, in spring 2005. Sounds like a great idea to me. Thoughts?

Sounds great if they can get it planned right, have it organized well and most importantly get most of the star players involved.
I would assume the USA would be favorites but other countries could put together very good rosters. |

If done well, it could be really neat. The biggest issue (and it's HUGE) will be getting all the players available (either because of the players themselves, the union, or MLB - or all of the above).

Let's do it. I really enjoy the hockey world cup. Why not?

the article says 8-16 teams would take part of the competition.
for those of you unfamiliar with the World Cup, this is the format: 32 nations, split into 8 groups of 4 each team in a group plays other group members once, for a total of 3 games top 2 of each group advance to round of 16 one-game elimination rounds all the way to the final would that be an appropriate format for baseball? would you be happy with the one-and-out elimination format?

If they say world cup, it should have that format. A march madness format wouldn't be as much fun.
Cheers to this idea though. Its about time something positive comes out of the commishes office. A real baseball world series. USA, Canada, Mexico, DR, Cuba, Venezuela, Netherlands Antilles (Curacao), Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, China, South Korea, Australia, Panama, Italy, Netherlands. Thats all the baseball playing countries that I can think of. Are there 15 other countries out there that play baseball. Puerto Rico doesn't count.
