Post NDF 2003-04 Winter Fun - 1880 Award Winners

For the season referenced in the subject line of this thread, who would be your pick for NL Best Batter, NL Best Pitcher, Best First Year in the NL Player, NL Manager of the Year, and NL Best Comeback Player?

Why?

1880 Win Shares data:

Pitching; Jim McCormick (Cleveland) 54, Larry Corcoran (Chicago) 52, John M. Ward (Providence) 51, Mickey Welch (Troy) and Lee Richmond (Worcester) 42.

Position players; George Gore (Chicago) 24, Abner Dalrymple (Chicago) 23, Adrian Anson (Chicago) 20, Paul Hines (Providence) 19, Jim O'Rourke (Boston), Fred Dunlap (Cleveland) and Roger Connor (Troy) at 17.

For a pitcher, Tim Keefe was magnificent, but only pitched 12 games. I think this is a toss-up between McCormick and Ward, but I'll go with J.M. Ward in this year.

At the plate, Gore was dominant in this season. He led the league in batting average, on base, slugging, and OPS+. He was surrounded by hitters of exceptional quality like King Kelly, Anson and Dalrymple, who got some of the counting stats that way, but Gore was the best.

That was some outfield with Dalrymple, Gore and Kelly, all 22-23 years old. Chicago rolled to the pennant that year.

For ROY, I'll say Roger Connor, with an impressive debut starting a HOF career.

Best Batter: Piano legs Gore
His best year by a longshot.

Best Pitcher: Jim Mccormick
45 wins in 657 innings.

Best Rookie (I am going by baseball-reference's debut listing): Larry Corcoran
43 wins in his debut. Although smiling Timmy Keefe's .86 ERA was impressive.

Best Manager: Cap Anson
Leads the Cubs to a pennant. Anyone that can do that is the best in my book.

Best Comeback: Abner Dalrymple
Rebounds from an off year to post an OPS+ greater than 150.

I can't find that debut listing, and it's keeping me from making rookie judgments. Can you provide a link?

McCormick and Gore were the NPOTY for 1880. I'll go with them, where applicable. Others to follow.

Best Hitter: Abner Dalrymple
Could pick any one of three Cubs, the hits leader is my selection.

Best Pitcher: Jim McCormick
72 complete games and 45 wins...I think that's pretty good.

Best Rookie: Roger Connor
I'd love to give this to Tim Keefe, but Roger had a full season.

Best Manager: Cap Anson
Skipped the best team of the 19th century.

Best Comeback: George Gore
Wasn't the best hitter, but came a long way to come close to it.

Jim McCormick has to be MOY.

McCormick and Gore are good choices for Cy and MVP. McCormick should get comeback as well. A triple crown for McCormick!

I'd give ROY to Larry Corcoran.
