Default Sosa Picks Up His Option

Not terribly surprising, but Sammy Sosa picked up his option and will stay with the Cubs, making $16 million next year and $17 million in 2005.

What does this do to the free agent market in outfielders?

On the demand side, it looks to me like the Cubs won't be in the market for a new outfielder, except possibly for a backup (if they can't get Lofton back).

On the supply side, there is one less decent rightfielder on the market. Does this help the value of other free agent outfielders, like Vlad Guerrero, Gary Sheffield, and Manny Ramirez?

I doubt it changes much. I don't think many expected Sosa to leave the Cubs, and Vlad (and Sheff) would get interest anyway. Manny, depending upon how serious Boston is about getting rid of him (i.e. eating salary) is the wildcard in the mix.

I would have been amazed if Sammy turned down his option. He wouldn't have gotten that much money as a free agent and the Cubs have a chance to be real good next season.

Seems like a pretty obvious decision for Sammy.
