Makes sense to me. Afterall the Yanks only scored the third most runs in the AL last year.

Back on topic - - if they hire Mattingly, Chili Davis, or Molitor to replace Down - - that's fine by this Yankee fan.
Down's been around - NY 2x, Baltimore, LA - - there has to be a reason.

I dunno. Depends how angry Steinbrenner is. If he allows his baseball people to make decisions, the Yanks will survive.

Do you think Mattingly, Davis, or Molitor would make a good hitting coach? |

Unless they hook on with a manager (Martin-Fowler, for instance), coaches are generally expendible, no? I do remember hearing his first go-round in NY that he was let go because he was a racist. Chris Russo brought it up, so I don't know how much stock to put into it (I didn't put much). But his first tour of duty in NY was under the Showalter regime, and IIRC he was moved as part of a power play between George & Buck. I don't know what happened in LA, *edit: Boston,* or Bal'mer (though I do remember the O's being pretty stong offensively when he was there. Maybe he rubbed Cal the wrong way?) I assume Down'll be back managing in the minors, or coaching somewhere

"And there's something about that smell, coupled with the sight of the infidels partying in the House That Rupe Built, that drives the man crazy."
I didn't know Ryan Rupe had such a critical place in Yankees history!!

What, you mean they're going to try the Bronx Burners experiment again?

Well we can only hope Stein loses his mind because even without adding one and despite the defections the Yanks would still be a good club.
Differences in 1981 and now are apparent. The 2003 Yanks have a much stronger nucleus than the 1981 team. Stein should be smart enough to realize that when he was running the show the Yanks didn't win bupkes. Listening to his baseball people and taking a low profile let him pick up 4 WS trophies. And as importantly the Yankees farm system is empty. Tough to go fishing when you have no bait.

Yes, that's why I would have no issue with any of them.

The problem with the Yankee's hitting was not the over all hitting. It was getting the hit when they needed it, there is a difference. This problem did not start in the World Series, it was a problem from mid season and just carried on to post season. The reason it did not hurt them that much during the season is because with all those games you can, at times make up for it. Fail to hit and advance the runners or drive them home in a short series, a disaster.
