Question Griffey To Seattle Rumors

http://reds.enquirer.com/2003/10/03/griffey03.html

I'm confused by Griffey's quotes - what is he trying to say here?

Quote:
Speculation by Seattle sports columnists that the Mariners might be interested in bringing outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. back has attracted some important attention in Cincinnati - from Griffey himself.

Griffey, who has played the past four seasons for the Reds after being traded by Seattle, can't talk with Mariners' officials under Major League Baseball's tampering rules.

But he did pick up the phone to call The Seattle Times about the recent coverage, even if he didn't say much.

"You know I can't say anything about that," Griffey told the paper. "But everyone's been calling me about the story you had out there."

"Just say ... I'm calling about Edgar," Griffey said, referring to designated hitter Edgar Martinez, who may have played his last game in Seattle.

"And I really am. I wish him well in his big decision. He means so much to the city and to the team. Edgar's great for Seattle, great for the Mariners and their fans."

POSTING TIP FOR THE DAY: When composing a post, think about what you would say if the intended recipient was an individual who was actually sitting just two feet in front of you, in person, rather than just some far away and anonymous audience who only can identify you as text on a PC screen - - and then write your post in that manner. It makes for remarkable and sincere discourse.

Doesn't sound like he's saying much. The fact that he bothered to call them makes me think that he probably misses - at least somewhat - his time in Seattle. It certainly has to remind him of better days.

It's all very mysterious at this point. I think Junior is trying to indicate to the Mariners an interest in returning to Seattle without drawing the ire of Reds fans, or any wrath from the MLB offices.

He's pretty much got the ire (or at the least the boos) of a whole bunch of Reds fans anyway. It's got to wear on you being booed by your hometown fans when you (in your mind anyway) are trying hard and are simply hit by injuries.

Sadly, as the book says, you can never go home again.
