Default Upcoming book

I'd like to share some news with my NetShrine buddies and for once, I'm sure where to post it!

I have agreed to write a book in the off-season dealing with pitcher injuries. I will be assisted by Tom House and Jim Andrews. It's my hope that it will educate people about the causes and show people that there are ways to lessen or prevent these injuries. Less injured pitchers makes for better baseball.

So, would anyone read this?

Will - for sure I would check it out. But, would I understand it? At what level of understanding/intelligence will the writing style, etc., be aimed?

It makes for remarkable and sincere discourse.

Absolutely.

I know pathetically little about injuries, except to report that X is out because of Y. But, I usually don't know much about that Y.

You've done an excellent job with UTK, in terms of explaining things to a science dummy like me to understand, without an overkill of technical material. You're an expert who doesn't talk down to his audience and is also able to convey enough of the technical information that is necessary to report on, but does in a manner that could be understood. I'm sure that, at times, the latter can be a difficult thing to do and I appreciate how well you've done the job.

And, in addition to educating me, if your work is also able to reduce the number of injuries, which would then improve the quality of the product on the field, that would also greatly be appreciated.

I'll definitely get a copy.

And I've got the same question as Steve - at what level would this be written? Doing it in layman's terms would be helpful to non-medheads.

It would definitely depend upon the sophistication level of the target audience. That's a hard middle ground to find. Make it Medheads for Dummies and you lose the serious readers while most of the 'dummies' probably wouldn't care anyway. Make it too sophisticated and a lot of that middle audience (such as many of us here, I presume) would be lost, but it could garner you a lot of respect in the biz.

I'd read it, for sure. Will you be including anything regarding alternative approaches to pitching aimed at reducing the potential for injury (like Mike Marshall's academy)? Either way, I'm interested.

Thanks for the feedback. It will be on much the same level as a book like The Pitching Edge (Tom House) or The Diamond Appraised (without the math.) If you read UTK, you know exactly the level I'll write at. There will be more space to do more fundamentals like anatomy, pitching mechanics, etc - which are also things you'll see at BP in the offseason - but I'm trying to keep an 'ideal reader' in mind, which for me would be the parent of a high school pitcher. They probably know baseball and want to learn more about how to help their child and keep him healthy, but probably don't have a deep medical or statistical background. If I can write to them, I'll probably be at near the right level for a more generally interested audience. If you want more medicine, there are technical journals. If you want more stats, BP 2004 will be out in February. If you want "... For Dummies," go ask Joe Morgan.

Husker: Tom House and Mike Marshall (among others) will be big parts of the book. In the pitching coach section, I'll be speaking with House, Marshall, Mazzone, Peterson, Rothschild, and Gullett and comparing and distilling their approaches.

Mas excellente!! Put me down for a pre-order...assuming, of course, that I can get an autographed copy if I supply the correct postage, etc.

Speaking of Leo the Magnificent, I remember seeing you and him (with some other fellow) many weeks ago on the Worldwide Leader in Sports talking about pitcher abuse...do you have any regular dialog with Mr. Mazzone?

The 'other fellow' was Tom House, on Outside the Lines.

I wouldn't say I speak regularly with Mr. Mazzone, but I have his phone number. Unless it's pitching specific, I have a better source in that dugout.

It sounds tempting Will. I'll look for it when it comes out.

Too bad Johnny Sain is 86 - he is still alive, no? - or else I would have said "Reach out to him with the other coaches."

Another I highly recommend Will is Jim Kaat - - if you tell him who else is participating, he might be willing to provide some input as well.

Shoot - if it's a book on "dealing with pitcher injuries" - you may want to reach out to Tommy John - - or someone like Mike Harkey (who, I'm pretty sure is coaching in the bushes) with a history of a bunch of injuries.

Lance Carter could have some good input as well - - didn't he have a couple of Tommy Johns?

And, what about some trainers? I would love to know what Gene M. in NY did for Catfish back in 1978.

Tommy John's on the list of people to talk to - had him on BPR and he was great. Sain is old and I'm told he's not as on the ball as he once was, but he's 86. Mazzone is very much the protege of Sain, so I think that's as close as I can get. There are several trainers I'll be talking to, but since some of them are sources as well, I have to be careful

Smed, it's YOUR turn to buy ME a beer. Cheapskate.
