The player who was playing first base for the Braves last night, you know the man who's first name is Julio.
Well, for 15+ years I've known his last name to be pronounced in baseball circles as Frank-O. But last night, Joe Buck (I think that's who it was) was pronouncing it Frahn-co. What's going on? Did Joe do this on his own or did Julio come out with some kind of statement - !ME LLAMO FRAHN-CO! By the way, don't know where to put this thread. Could go in PAS, but doesn't have much to do with baseball. |

I think Jon Miller was pronouncing Guzman on Sunday as "gooz MAHN" as well......wish I had saved the TIVO of the game.

Geez, who cares??Miller is fluent in Spanish, I believe...either way it's an inprovement from the days of Clemente being called "Bobby" because Roberto was Too Spanish

I agree. Jesus Alou was called "Jay" because American broadcasters were uncomfortable calling someone "Jesus." I think one of the first broadcasters to make a real effort to pronounce foreign-born players' names right was Gene Hart. When the Flyers played the Central Red Army team and when the Russian players first started coming over, he would use the Russian pronounciations and I would have no idea who he was talking about (the center for Detroit is "Feed-er-ahv" not Fed-der-off). |

well, good thing you don't live around here. there's some wack-o blowing people away at random. between that and the crime infested neighborhood I live, in the only time I feel safe is at work or inside my home. (we have iron bars on every window and a $4000 security system. oh yeah, and a 180 pound dog). |

certainly you must remember Pedro "Pete" Ramos and Zolio "Zorro" Versalles or more recently Roberto "Bobby" Kelly
