Just got back from today's A's-Yanks game - -
The win was Ted Lilly's 1st as a big leaguer - it was also Joe Torre's 500th as Yankee MGR. Listening to the post game in the car, Torre said that Mo Rivera gave the (final out) game ball to him, and he was keeping it. He offered that he would give Lilly one of the line-up cards from the game. Who should have this "game ball" - Lilly or Torre? |

I'd say Torre. He has "seniority," so to speak. Giving Lilly a line-up card is a nice gesture on Torre's part, and Lilly could always have one of the other balls used in the game.
It's kind of cool for Lilly to get his first MLB win in Torre's 500th career victory, don't you think? |

I'm sure the shared link will make it more memorable for both - and hopefully a bond that they'll always appreciate having together.

I remember reading this story Sunday morning, and even though it is a non-issue, I was surprised at some of Torre's comments.
"Kid picked a bad day to get a win." Joe Torre has been in Baseball forever, has managed 4 World Chapions, I believe Lilly (who by the way has looked really good) deserves this one. This is number 500 for Torre as a Yankee manager, a significant number, but not important enough to take away the game ball from a first major league win. |

Lilly should get the ball, hand's down.
While Torre will never have another 500th victory, this is this kid's first MLB win!!! Torre has rings, championships, other balls etc. to throw on his coffee table so he should do the right thing and give Lilly the ball. I don't know what the final fate of this ball is, but I'd feel real bad if my manager who has everything takes the ball too. Yeah - good leadership. I'm with you wilyg. |

I'm with you Willy and Mex - - but, maybe there's more to it? Perhaps, and I'm just guessing, maybe the ball means nothing to Lilly?
Surprisingly, a lot of big leaguers don't care about trinkets and the like. I've heard a lot of stories about guys who just don't care - - sadly, even some, despite being big leaguers, weren't even baseball fans growing up! |
