Cool

In late August 1999, I was at a game between the Mariners and Yankees with 5 or 6 of my buddies. Yanks pounded the M's. Jeter did something wild - he scored runs in each of the first 3 or 4 innings or something. They batted around like every inning. Half of the M's line-up that day (if memory served correct) consisted of:

Brian Hunter
Raul Ibanez
David Bell
Russ Davis
John Mabry

At one point, my friend John turned to me and said "This will never work - having Griffey and A-Rod and no money for anything else - - the rest of these guys have to be the worse team in baseball."

Well, now just about a year and a half later, look at them M's!

Fresh off a playoff appearance last year - and started off this season 20-5.

What's truly amazing about the 20-5 start is that they could easily be 23 and 2 or 24 and 1!

Here's the scores of their five losses so far this year:
Three one run losses: 2-1, 4-3, 5-4. One 2-run loss: 8-6. And, one true loss: 5 to one.

Piniella may just have another wire-to-wire champ this year (to go with his '90 Reds).

Yeah, they have really impressed me. Those Japanese players are pretty consistent, and the bullpen is something to reckon with.

Agreed 95 - - a deep and flexable pen is the difference, sometimes, between the winners and the losers.

And all of this without KGJ and A-Rod!

Ironic, don't you think?

Perhaps even more of a direct cause and effect there.
