Running Elvis Has Left the Building

The Royals optioned Runelvys ("Running Elvis") Hernandez to Wichita. I have no problem with this move. The guy got off to a great start then hurt his elbow. Sat out two months and piled on the pounds. Hasn't been worth a damn since he got off the DL.

From the original Royals starting five man rotation we have two guys sent to the minors, one guy who has been on the DL since mid-May, and another guy sent to the bullpen. Only Darrell May has surviced to from the original five and he was demoted to the bullpenn for a short period of time.

And with all that - they're still in first place. I think Hernandez will bounce back and Affeldt will be good as well.

The KC Star is reporting that Runelvys Hernandez will need "Tommy John" surgery to repair his right elbow. He will be out until the 2005 season. Hernandez whose physically conditioning work ethic is questionable is not a great bet to make it back.

Kevin Appier was also place on the DL and is going to need some kind of surgery on his arm. He probably isn't a part of the Royals 2004 plans anyway, but with the Angels paying him about $8M next year he might sign with them on the cheap.

Ouch! Runelvys was a good-looking young pitcher, too. Hope he makes it back.
