Steve Garvey or Keith Hernandez? Who was better?
I think Mex makes it on both peak and career value! Last edited by Fuzzy Bear : 08-25-2003 at 04:21 PM. |

Compare Hernandez' RCAA totals to Garvey's. Not even close.

The Mex, hands down - and he wrote a good book and was on Seinfeld, too!

Hernandez by quite a bit, even though Garvey is not a stiff.
No to the HoF for both.

It all depends on what your definition of better is.
Using the conventional definition, it's easily Hernandez. But, if "better" ever turns out to be redefined to mean inferior, then it will be very difficult to argue anything but Garvey being the better player.

Hernandez by a comfortable margin. He did everything Garvey did but better, minus a few home runs.

Another vote for Hernandez - and his being known for a Seinfeld appearance is way better than what Garvey is remembered for off the field.

Hernandez was better but Garvey was a decent player, both offensively and defensively. Garvey took a lot of flack for his poor on-base percentage, but he hit with power, and Dodger Stadium is a rather poor offensive ballpark, especially poor for chain offense. Defensively Garvey had a poor throwing arm but was otherwise an excellent (and smart) defensive player

How could any wrong that he did compare with that?" - John Sears |

Hernandez was arguably the best defensive first baseman ever.
