The P in question is said to be IF Tim Hummel. I like Hummel, his minor league numbers say "Marcus Giles" to me. At 24, that's probably optimistic, but he has a decent average, power, draws walks, and plays good enough defense to impress John Sickels.
Sullivan is a capable enough middle reliever. But as a Reds fan, I like this deal. The players don't, as Sullivan was popular on the team. |

The players can deal. When the Reds are in contention again Sullivan wouldn't be there.

I think it's a great trade both ways. Hummel wasn't going anywhere with the White Sox, not with Willie Harris in the way and Tony Graffinino playing pretty well as a utility infielder. The Reds can start hoarding MIs the way they have hoarded OFs for the last couple of years, and Hummel is probably better than Juan Castro.
Meanwhile, Sullivan gives the White Sox an honest-to-goodness innings eater down the stretch, somebody new to most AL hitters, and somebody that can pitch ok on the road. He's only signed through 2003, but he'd be a good fit on the 2004 team as well.

I think poorme is on with the Blauser comparison. Closer than my own Marcus Giles reference. That's a pretty good player. |

All the more reason for me to believe that the Sox will take the Central this season.

Even though the Sox upper management can epitomize incompetence, if Hummel was as good as Giles or Blauser he likely would have been up this year. Instead the Sox trotted out Jimenez and Harris...yuck. Sox friends who have seen Hummel and Aaron Miles swear Miles is much better. Plus Hummel has been playing 3rd lately. I doubt he'd unseat Joe Crede. Kevin

The Reds have been quite happy with Jiminez, as well.

The Sox are in good position, but while they are playing the Yankees (6 games) and the BoSox (5 games) the Twins and Royals will be playing Texas and Anaheim. The ChiSox also have 7 games against each the Royals and Twin while those two teams are done playing each other. Of the Sox remaining 31 games only six are against sub-.500 teams. The Twins and Royals each have 25 games against sub-.500 teams.

Welcome, IB!
Since joining the Sox, Sullivan has a 6.35 ERA in 5 and 2/3. |
