Default Major League Draft

I was flipping through www.retrosheet.org looking at transactions for the Red Sox in the 60's and 70's (I'm researching Dick O'Connell.) Each winter, there was a Major League Draft. Is anyone here familiar with that draft? Was it similar to the Rule V draft?

They used to have two drafts of amateurs, one in the summer and a "supplemental" draft in the winter months. It is possible this is what is referred to here.

No, sweave, those amatuer drafts are listed as well. Thanx anyways.

The winter draft was in January. How come there were two amateur drafts to begin with?

Sounds good. This'll lead me to wonder now what the secondary phase of the draft was for...

I thought the "draft" for non-pros started in 1965.

GGC - the dates you saw, were they post 1964?

Indeed, they were.

Got this off MLB.com:

A January Free Agent Amateur Draft was added for the first time in 1966. Ninety-five prospects were selected in the regular phase and 102 in the secondary phase of the January draft, which featured only players previously drafted who did not sign.

Looks like it lasted until at least 1976.

But I think the draft GGC initially referred to was a Rule V type draft.

I looked at Boston, 1967 - in November they drafted George Spriggs from the Pirates, who had a couple of cups of coffee and a danish for the Pirates over the seasons before.

Longer than that...1986 actually. (You probably meant to say that)

But I know thread this referred to the "Major League Draft". Looking up everything, Retrosheet refers to the Rule V draft as the Major League Draft in its documents. It's been Rule V since they first started doing it...I think it's only been...umm...I'll guess maybe 20-so years since we've referred to it as the Rule V draft.
