Question Call It The Greg Maddux Award?

Greg Maddux has won 15+ games for 15 years in a row - - 1988 to 2002. The only other pitcher to do this 15 years in a row was Cy Young. Maddux needs 5 more wins this year to set the all time record. Think he'll do it?

Here's the list coming into this season:

Code:
Most seasons in a row with WINS >= 15 T1 Cy Young 1891-05 15 T1 Greg Maddux 1988-02 15 3 Gaylord Perry 1966-78 13 4 Christy Mathewson 1903-14 12 T5 Pud Galvin 1879-89 11 T5 Warren Spahn 1953-63 11 T7 Tim Keefe 1881-90 10 T7 Kid Nichols 1890-99 10 T7 Walter Johnson 1910-19 10 T10 John Clarkson 1885-93 9 T10 Joe McGinnity 1899-07 9 T10 George Mullin 1903-11 9 T10 Bob Lemon 1948-56 9

POSTING TIP FOR THE DAY: When composing a post, think about what you would say if the intended recipient was an individual who was actually sitting just two feet in front of you, in person, rather than just some far away and anonymous audience who only can identify you as text on a PC screen - - and then write your post in that manner. It makes for remarkable and sincere discourse.

Maddux will have to pitch better to do that. Still, he is one of the greatest ever. I wouldn't rank him above Cy Young, but then again, maybe it should be the "Walter Johnson Award."

Besides Maddux and Perry, who in the last half-century has put together a streak of 15+ in even a 7-season span? That's what's most impressive about his consistency.

Of course, consistency doesn't necessarily make you the greatest, and I don't think Cy Young has to worry about being displaced on the front of the trophy.

Excellent point.

Consecutive seasons stats are kind of spurious anyway.

They don't show consistency?

They're arbitrary. How does the stats change if you make it 14 wins or 16 wins?

I agree if you change the number of wins, the stats will change. Picking the right "number" is impossible 'tho. Who's to say what's right?
