1) The A's placed P Jim Mecir on the 15 day DL, retroactive to July 24, and called up P Chad Harville.
Mecir has inflammation in his right knee. He's been battling knee problems all season and the trainer says he doesn't need more surgery. After 3.43 ERA/6 RSAA and 4.26 ERA/3 RSAA seasons, Mecir has a 5.13 ERA/-2 RSAA in his first 26 games. He has a 3.79 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.68, and 41 RSAA in 342 games. 2) A MRI on Reds P Ryan Dempster showed he has a bone chip in his elbow. He'll have arthroscopic surgery next week and is probably out for the rest of the season. 3) The Reds called up P Josh Hall after they placed Dempster on the DL. Hall, 22, may be headed right back to the minors after he makes his major league debut by starting today, since the Reds don't need a 5th starter again until August 9. He was given a C grade by John Sickels and was ranked as the Reds #9 prospect by Baseball America. Hall came into the year with a 3.74 ERA in 4 minor league seasons, including a 3.75 ERA in AA in 2002, and he has a 3.20 ERA in 20 starts (21 games) in AA in 2003. 4) On Thursday, Twins P Kenny Rogers reached 1500 career SO. Rueter has a strained shoulder. He just came off the DL and was only able to make 1 start before returning to it. Rueter is expected to miss at least 3 weeks, with the Giants saying this injury isn't season ending. Urban, 26, was given a C grade by Sickels and wasn't included in the Giants top 30 prospect list by BA. he came into the year with 4.09 ERA in 5 minor league seasons, including a 3.41 ERA in AAA in 2002, and he has a 5.08 ERA in 22 games (17 starts) in AAA in 2003. 6) Cardinals P Jeff Fassero reached 1500 career SO. After 3.42 ERA/6 RSAA and 5.35 ERA/-10 RSAA seasons, Fassero has a 5.74 ERA/-9 RSAA in his first 48 games (3 starts). Switzer, who turns 24 later in the month, was given a C grade by Sickels and was ranked as the team's #7 prospect by BA. He has a 3.50 ERA in 21 starts in AA in 2003, which is his first time above Hi-A ball. Guadin, 20, was ranked as the Devil Rays #22 prospect by BA and wasn't included in Sickels's book. He's in his 2nd pro season, after being a 34th round draft pick in 2001, and his only experience above Hi-A ball is a 0.47 ERA in 3 starts in AA in 2003. Shumpert has a strained right hamstring. Shiell didn't pitch during this brief callup, while Collier was 0 for 1 in 4 games. 9) Norm McRae died on July 25, at the age of 55. McRae had a 3.18 ERA/2 RSAA in 22 relief appearances with the 1969-70 Tigers. 10) The Pirates called up OF Tike Redman and P Mark Corey and designated P Jim Mann for assignment.
