Question Pettitte - 12x9 - Ho Hum or Well Done?

With his win last night, Andy Pettitte (now 12-6 in 2003) became the first pitcher to win at least 12 games in his first nine seasons starting with his rookie year since Hall of Famer Stan Coveleski did it for Cleveland from 1916-26.

Is this a big deal or just a statistical oddity? Why?

He's good - some of his success in W/L obviously is because of who he plays for. However, his ERA+ is better than what I thought.

Still, you have to be lucky and relatively injury free to get there.

He has stayed healthy enough to make 30 starts a year, and pitched for a good team. I think of Pettitte as Tom Glavine Lite, but he can do the job.

Look at Tom Glavine's stats thru and including age 30. He and Pettitte are very close to each other. It will be interesting to see if Pettitte can manage to get close to 250 wins.

Pettitte also, win-wise, is on track with Frank Viola's career.

Frankie V stopped winning at 176.

Partly talent, partly luck in staying healthy, and partly the fact that he pitches for the Yankees.....oh, and partly lucky in that he survived George's occasional urges to trade him......

He's a Free Agent this winter, IIRC.
Betcha he signs quickly and for less than market - just to stay with NY - - like O'Neill used to do. He was recently quoted that he could not imagine playing for anyone but the Yankees.

Gotta give the guy credit -- throught the glory days there have been a lot of pitchers to come and go in pinstripes. He's not a #1 guy, but, I think any team would be happy to have him in the middle of the rotation.

hmmm...at least in recent years, he's not only been helped by being on a strong team, he's also had better than average support from the Yankee offense when he starts (a la Wells)....his run support and wins over the past few years, compared to the yankee average:
Code:
RS NYY W NYY % 2000 7.61 5.41 19 87 .22 2001 6.46 5.03 15 95 .16 2002 5.21 5.57 13 103 .13 2003 6.61 5.37 12 63 .19
2002 is a bit of an outlier as he only made 22 starts, but he's had great run support

At this point, Pettitte matches up in value with Mel Parnell. He could get a little better.
