Default Bosox and Bill James

I always thought this tradition bound team and Bill James was an odd coupling.

The New Yorker examines them.

It seems logical that the scientific minded John Henry would go this route. As for tradition, well it is better left for Broadway plays such as "Fidler On The Roof" to give it it's proper laurels

How could any wrong that he did compare with that?" - John Sears

LOL.

Of course it was Harry Frazee's poor track record on Broadway that led to him selling Babe Ruth from Boston to New York.

Tradition indeed.

According to some, that's a myth. Frazee reportedly thought Ruth's poor training habits would lead to a short career, and dealt him for top dollar. Turned out to be a big mistake, either way.

That was a well-done article. It wasn't choked with skepticism about the relationship or a worship of Bill James. Too bad the major sports publications don't write articles like that.

BTW, James' place of work and his habits are one of the funniest bits in the article. Sounds like a truly focused man.

I don't know when Dan Shaughnessy became the dean of anything. He's of the "mock those who never played the game" school, though I don't think he ever played himself. I agree completely with Bruce Allen's take, as noted on his Boston Sports Media Blog.

"Dan Shaughnessy goes after Bill James again today. His favorite word whenever he talks about James is "scary". But consider this, who is more scary and disturbed as an individual, the guy who uses statistics (facts) and formulas to project what is going to happen to the players and team, or a guy who uses a "curse" that he is largely responsible for perpetrating on the region, from the sale of a player 80-something years ago, to project what is going to happen to the players and team?"

Stats-obsessed guys like James still continue to be targets, no matter how much validity there might be to his arguments. Thankfully, James has a thick enough skin that these barbs likely mean nothing to him.

Thick skinned ... I guess I should get one of those since he called me "some other moron" recently.

POSTING TIP FOR THE DAY: When composing a post, think about what you would say if the intended recipient was an individual who was actually sitting just two feet in front of you, in person, rather than just some far away and anonymous audience who only can identify you as text on a PC screen - - and then write your post in that manner. It makes for remarkable and sincere discourse.

Wilbert - at least you're not a luddite and think that anything past batting average is worthless.

The old-school mediots will never give in to their beliefs. They need to be systematically eliminated!

I think this means Will has arrived, if Shaughnessy refers to him as "some other moron." I have rarely seen one of the CHB's opinions where I didn't think the exact opposite!
