Thumbs up All Century Team

I gripe a lot about the 2000 all century team. I'm fairly new to this discussion group, so I don't know if you have talked this to death before, but here is mine, and I'd like anyone's opinion also to see just how far off base I am.

1b-Lou Gehrig & Jimmie Foxx
2b-Rogers Hornsby & Joe Morgan
3b-Mike Schmidt, Eddie Mathews & George Brett
SS-Honus Wagner & Ernie Banks
OF-Mickey Mantle,Ted Williams,Babe Ruth,Tris Speaker,Willie Mays,Hank Aaron,Barry Bonds,Stan Musial & Ty Cobb.
CA-Johnny Bench & Yogi Berra
PI- Lefty Grove,Walter Johnson,Cy Young,Bob Gibson,Roger Clemens,Sandy Koufax,Bob Feller,Tom Seaver,Grover Alexander.

any opinions???

According to the retired numbers outside of Monument Park, Bill Dickey was considered the best Yankee catcher, so he'd come before Yogi, despite my loving Yogi (hence my screen name). I think anyone worth anything would say that Campy could never be missing from the best catchers of all time and certainly from NY.

I would add Satchel Paige to the pitchers, Brooks Robinson to 3B and Yaz to the OF.

BTW, catcher is "C" and pitcher is "P".

Wink

Thanks for your reply, I disagree about Berra vs. Dickey, but that's the fun of it. BTW if I had wanted an abbreviation lesson, I would have asked for one.

Yogi,

Bill James wrote an article in the first edition of the Historical Abstract indicating that sabermetric evaluating might lead one to go with Yogi over Bill as the greatest Yankees catcher ever. Just one of the many thing that James points to is that the people of Yogi's time were really knocked out over how great he was as noted by their voting him the MVP Award 3 times. Dickey, even during his best seasons, did not do especially well in the balloting.

nightal,

That looks like a great list to me!

Our teams are pretty close.

Y & T - mainsr and I once went into on Yogi and Dickey. Let me look for it.

I'd like to throw Frank Robinson in there in the outfield. And Bill Dickey couldn't carry Berra's mitt.
