Peter Gammons did a piece on this a while back, but I thought I'd throw it out here.
When you look at the current crop of great young pitchers, who among them will end up being the Roger Clemenses, Greg Madduxes, and Tom Glavines of their generation?

I don't think we'll see another Rocket (near 300 wins & 4000 Ks) for a long time. As far as next great pitchers, Tim Hudson is the first to come to my mind.

I guess Roy Oswalt comes to mind for me when the next greatest comes to mind.....Bud Smith can dominate also....forget about Kerry Wood it is too bad but I do not see his career doing much....but the biggest tragedy is Pedro- the best pitcher since who knows...his career is probably over.......

I would not stick a fork in Pedro just yet. The secret to his pitching is his hypermobilty. The guy is more than just double jointed. He can easily change his arm slot with little to no strain to his rotator cuff. NOTE: Pedro was going to persue medicine prior to his decission to go into baseball. (saw that on a NESN piece)
My personal favorite young gun is a kid named Casey Fossum, crafty left hander......lots of smoke, fair control, and sneaky movement. |

Times change and looking way back to Cy Young himself, he'd had to start many complete games, even having pitched a double header I remember having read somewhere. Today's pitchers are practically babied by comparison. He'd had 511 wins but quite a few losses.
With today's 4- or 5-man rotations, this couldn't increase beyond that number on the mound, since 300 wins = 15 wins x 20 seasons. I'd say it's more like 550 HRs, not just 500, since there are very few who've gotten that high. If you're going to decide who's the next Roger or who'll next get 4,000 whiffs or 300 wins, you'd need to check back a decade after their rook year. |

If I'm not mistaken, Cy Young is the all time career leader in both wins and losses. The man pitched a hell of a lot of ball games. As to who the next Clemens is - I really don't know. There are a lot of great young pitchers getting the hype right now, but they are each one torn ligament away from being forgotten. Although in the modern era, 300 wins and 3000 strikeouts are harder and harder milestones to achieve, I do think there is a high probability they will be reached by someone just starting out now. If I knew who, though, I'd be a GM. ![]() |

Why are we talking about who the next Roger Clemens is?
The King is still alive. Shouldn't we wait until the King abdicates his throne before we replace him.

See Duque's first post in this thread. It's not just about Clemens - 'tho folks in this forum should love to debate him.

BTW, if you'd known this, you wouldn't be a GM, you'd be a star on Vegas. Get that man a private room filled with luxe accomodations! |
