Netshrine Cleanup Hitter

That's the name I gave him in my weblog, after he beat the Reds twice in a week. Now, he's doing it to the Mets, too. Here's a link to the Miami Herald's story of his one-hitter. http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/6104564.htm
Have you seen him pitch? He's got one of those cool, old-fashioned funky motions. Willis is a trip to watch, as long as he's not beating your team. |

Actually, I'd rather have his nickname be "What You Talkin' 'Bout".

I was trying to avoid the obvious pop culture reference that every chump is making...
He has a chance to be a real special pitcher, though. |

And as an added bonus.....he can really swing the bat. He hit about a 410 ft. homer at Pro Player.

Every time I hear his first name, I think "Chandell" from the old Batman series.
At least there's an "ace" in Liberace. I still think he will flame out due to injury or a "other" stuff.

I saw him shutdown the A's a couple of weeks ago. He's going to be a special pitcher. Gammons compared him to Vida Blue last night on Baseball Tonight. Valentine said he ought to cut down on his motion, but that's picking a nit, IMO.
The kid's one of the most fun pitchers to watch, and has a tremendous future. |

I really, really hope he doesn't flame out. He's a lot of fun to watch, plus, he's exuberant.

...much fun to watch, reminded me of fidryich and Vida[even wore 35 like Blue did early on],though his motion was not as fluid as Blues...that was a brilliant 1-0 game...the cubs must be kicking themselves over this kid...I hope he gets a few good years in,because he was soooo much fun to watch

I've seen him a couple of times. The movement on the ball is incredible. I don't how he keeps it in the strike zone. There might actually be a crowd on Saturday to watch him pitch.

I don't know about "Cy" but I think "ROY" isn't out of the question.
He's just so great...everything about him is just damn cool...and plus he's enjoying himself out there, how could I NOT like that. It's like he has never-ending charisma. Curse the fact the Marlins are the one NL East team the M's didn't get... |

A few days ago I did something I rarely do, I tuned into one of the local sports radio stations. Got some good laughs too, when the idiots were talking about pitching. The conversation turned to what you can get in a trade, and the idiots were talking about Dontrelle Willis. They were talking about how easy it is to get a kid like Willis in the trade market, you know, someone who throws pretty hard, but walks a lot of guys. If you can fix them you can get something good. About that moment I started laughing, and darned near called the station (never happened). I did, however, take a look at his minor league stats, just to find out exactly how many guys he did (not) walk. They kid got better at every level he pitched at. He improved his k to bb rate from 3 to 1 to 5 to 1 in his 3 minor league seasons. Yeah, I guess its easy to get guys who walk that many players.
Of course, I live in the Chicago area, and this was local talking morons on the station, and apparently they were unaware that Willis was the key player in the Alfonseca/Clement trade. Guess they must think that Florida really liked that Tavarez guy or something.

He's absolutely a fantastic talent, no question, and fun to watch! Cy Young, at least at this early point, would be a bit of a stretch (see Schmidt, Jason and Williams, Woody), but ROY certainly could happen. The ONLY thing concerning me is the fact that he plays for the Marlins, not known for their ability to handle youngsters appropriately - his pitch count is regularly exceeding 100, and he's only 21. He could be fine, but I certainly would not want him getting as many as 15 starts in the 2nd half...

I think Wolfie's "flame out" could be right . It's awful early in his career - and young arms are an enigma. Is that motion mechanically sound (Will, can you help?)
there's been some angst on a Cubs board regarding Willis. Personally, it was bad to give up a lot for Alfonseca, but I really liked Clement who I thought would be great in Wrigley. The fact is that if Arnsberg and Torborg didn't try to Dallas Green their entire staff - Willis would still be in AAA. |
