Of the 21 who have won 300 games, how many have pitched a complete game for their 300th win? If any, who are they?

Good question, and probably a job for Retrosheet. I would guess that most of the "old" pitchers who got 300 went all the way.

I'm fairly certain that Galvin, Welch, Radbourn, Keefe, and Clarkson pitched CG. Almost fairly certain about Nichols and Young. It would seem Mathewson, Plank and Johnson WOULD have.

Galvin in 1888 completed 49 of 50 starts.
Keefe in 1890 completed 23 of 30 starts. Welch in 1890 completed 33 of 37. Radbourn in 1891 completed 23 of 24, and made 2 relief appearences. Clarkson completed 27 of 28, plus 1 in relief, in 1892. Nichols completed 25 of 27, 2 in relief, in 1900. Young completed 38 of 41, 2 in relief, in 1901. Mathewson completed 27 of 34, 9 in relief, in 1912. Plank completed 23 of 31, 11 in relief, in 1915. Johnson completed 12 of 15, 6 in relief, in 1920. Grove completed 10 of 21 in 1941. Spahn completed 21 of 34 in 1961 (not 1963), with 4 in relief. |

I suppose that what all this proves is that they were playing a different game back then. I have always felt that all-time leader lists and single season records, of all kinds should be divided into pre and post 1919

How could any wrong that he did compare with that?" - John Sears |
