Default Steve Phillips is out

The Mets have called a 4 PM press conference. According to Jayson Stark, Phillips is out and Jim Duquette is the interim GM.

The only question that comes to mind is,

"What took so long?"

FWIW -- I was checking the DLs yesterday to see which team had the most players on the DL right now.

I knew Cleveland had a lot of hurt players, but I assumed that the D'Backs were the worst off in that department.

I was wrong -- the Mets have more hurt players than any team in the majors right now.

Phillips may deserve the boot, but is it his fault that over a third of his team is hurt? How much better would they be if they were all healthy?

Phillips does bear some of the responsibility for the injuries as you have to realize that older players will have injuries. The more important thing that he has to answer for is that the injured players didn't perform when they were healthy.

Get a grip, Scarlett.

Ditto, Luis. Phillips had assembled a great team...if this was 1998. Five years too late to the party.

True, but I was really surprised by their sub-par performances -- especially Alomar's.

Yeah -- loading your lineup with high-priced old guys is really iffy.

Right. It worked for the '83 Phillies and the '72 Washington Redskins.

The next part will be dealing with the contracts for the next couple years. ...Since most everyone is un-unloadable.

Dan Lewis has an interesting take in his weblog, both about Phillips and the Mets' future: http://www.dlewis.net/index.php3#95612118

It's good to see the Mets giving the Rangers a challenge as the worst-run sports franchise in New York. There's a lot of work to be done by whoever is unfortunate enough to next fill that position.

I wonder if Phillips will even get another job in baseball? He's such a spotlight hog, who would want him?

FWIW, I gotta think Jimmy D is just a placeholder.

Anyone hear Valentine's comments on this? I've been really tied up lately - mostly unplugged - and missed anything.

It makes for remarkable and sincere discourse.
