I keep hearing Yankee fans saying they like Jason Giambi but since he's got no glove, he could be our DH. The Yankees generally had a floating DH, meaning usually Justice, Knoblauch or Spencer were selected, but those were all position players.
I've only known Manny Ramirez of Boston to be a full-time DH at the beginning of last season. Any other AL teams have a DH who generally doesn't play a position? I'm thinking such an idea would kill them during interleague or if they make it to the World Series. |

Edgar Martinez is just about a full-time DH, but during interleague play, he sometimes makes spot starts at 1st. I think he originally came up as a 3rd baseman, though.
Frank Thomas is also just about a full-time DH who makes very infrequent starts at 1st. Brad Fullmer up in Toronto has been relegated to the DH, David Ortiz in Minnesota, and Mike Sweeney is also pretty regularly a DH. And, of course, there's Jose Canseco.

Thanks, I should've known better. Other than Edgar, at least the others aren't giant names out there. I'm just opposed to the idea of a megadollar DH, that's all. I still feel they should have a great glove and do well on the bases.

Ellis Burks played 124 games at DH for the Tribe in 2001. Also Fred McGriff started 97 games at DH until he freed himself from Tampa in late July for the Ivy walls and day games that are Wrigley Field

McGriff I hadn't realized was a DH, since he now plays 1B for your team. Was Steve Cox, TB's 1B-man better defensively? Here's a list of all DH's in 2001 season. Interestingly, David Justice is also listed, but he's played LF & RF, including at Yankee Stadium, not just during interleague or WS. PS, How do you get the total number of games a player played at that position? |
