1) MLB just announced that Sammy Sosa has been suspended for 8 games. He is appealing.

2) The Rangers traded OF Ruben Sierra to the Yankees for minor league OF Marcus Thames.

In the past 10 years, Sierra's only had 1 with a positive RCAA (9 in 2001). He's hitting .398 SLG, .333 OBA, .732 OPS, -3 RCAA in his first 43 games and has a .770 career OPS, compared to his league average of .744, and 37 RCAA in 1941 games. Sierra already played for the Yankees, having a .737 OPS/-17 RCAA in 152 games in 1995-96.

Thames had a .769 OPS/0 RCAA in 7 games (13 PA) in 2002.

3) Mets P Tom Glavine had to leave yesterday's game in the 2nd inning, due to an elbow injury. He'll be evaluated today.

After 3.57 ERA/20 RSAA and 2.96 ERA/29 RSAA seasons, Glavine's off to a 4.82 ERA/-6 RSAA start in his first 13 starts. He has a 3.40 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.07, and 276 RSAA in 518 games.

Glavine recently moved into the NL's top 10 chart for worst career SO vs. the league average--

Code:
STRIKEOUTS DIFF PLAYER LEAGUE 1 Lew Burdette -626 1039 1665 2 Bob Forsch -534 1133 1667 3 Bob Purkey -463 793 1256 4 Kirk Rueter -439 717 1156 5 Vern Law -437 1092 1529 6 Claude Osteen -430 1234 1664 7 Jim Barr -401 650 1051 8 Randy Jones -366 735 1101 9 Terry Mulholland -363 1077 1440 10 Tom Glavine -341 2087 2428

And contrary to WFAN's Mike Francesa's constant insistence that the fact that Glavine's a soft tosser means he'll be excellent pitcher with no affects of age for years to come, the evidence indicates that soft tossers constantly defeat hard throwers in losing effectiveness by landslide margins. (At least Francesa was constantly making those claims through some point in spring training, but I quit listening to him cold turkey.)

As I discussed in my book, Glavine's a historical outlier in terms of having long term success as a soft tosser, but also came into the year as an excellent candidate for his luck to abruptly run out.

4) X-rays on Braves LF Chipper Jones showed he has a damaged ligament in his left wrist, which is good news compared to having a hairline fracture, which was what the team feared. He says he still has pain when he swings righthanded. Jones was able to play yesterday, with 3 of his 4 plate appearances coming against righties.

5) Braves P Mike Hampton had to leave yesterday's game in the 2nd inning, due to a strained groin muscle. GM John Schuerholz says Hampton is expected to make his next start.

After 5.41 ERA/-1 RSAA and 6.15 ERA/-22 RSAA seasons in Coors, Hampton's off to a 4.05 ERA/0 RSAA start in his first 10 starts. He has a 3.98 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.33, and 73 RSAA in 313 games.

Hampton had started off the season hot, but with a horrible SO rate, but that's already caught up to him. Hampton almost made it into the NL's top 10 list for worst single season SO/IP rate in 2002--

Code:
STRIKEOUTS/9 IP YEAR DIFF PLAYER LEAGUE 1 Joe Niekro 1969 -3.50 2.52 6.02 2 Kirk Rueter 2002 -3.41 3.36 6.77 3 Scott Karl 1999 -3.33 3.38 6.71 4 Kirk Rueter 2000 -3.28 3.47 6.75 5 Ed Lynch 1983 -3.27 2.27 5.54 6 Kirk Rueter 2001 -3.17 3.82 6.99 7 Jimmy Anderson 2001 -3.11 3.88 6.99 8 Zane Smith 1994 -3.09 3.27 6.36 9 Brian Meadows 1999 -3.07 3.63 6.71 10 Jamey Wright 1998 -3.05 3.75 6.80 11 Mike Hampton 2002 -3.04 3.73 6.77

6) Astros 2B Jeff Kent (sore right quadriceps) and CF Craig Biggio (deep bruise on his left calf were both removed from yesterday's game and their status for today hasn't been determined yet.

7) Rangers 1B Rafael Palmeiro was scratched from yesterday's lineup, due to stiffness in his back.

After 50 RCAA/.944 OPS and 41 RCAA/.962 OPS seasons, Palmeiro's off to a .526 SLG, .374 OBA, .900 OPS, 8 RCAA start in his first 54 games. He has a .896 career OPS, compared to his league average of .753, and 552 RCAA in 2467 games.

8) Reds CF Ken Griffey Jr. was out of yesterday's lineup, due to a 102 degree fever. According to MGR Bob Boone, Griffey's recovery from that illness will determine when he returns to the lineup and the triceps injury that took him out of Wednesday's game is already healed enough that it wouldn't keep him out of the lineup.

9) Free agent P Chuck Finley was offered a chance to return to the Angels, as a reliever, but he turned them down. According to the LA Times, the Mariners are now among the possibilities for Finley.

10) Expos RF Vladimir Guerrero had a MRI that showed he has a herniated disc in his back. He'll have a second opinion next week and if the diagnosis is confirmed, he's expected to go on the DL.

1) According to the Boston Globe, the Redsox and Mets could be working on a Roberto Alomar for Todd Walker trade, but Redsox CEO Larry Lucchino denies that a deal is close enough that he's apprised of the situation.

2) The Expos called up P Julio Manon and sent P Sun Woo Kim to the minors.

Manon, who turns 30 next week, had a 0.99 ERA in his 22 games in AAA in 2003. He's a 11 year minor league veteran who came into the year with a 4.29 career minor league ERA and pitched 4 shutout innings in his major league debut yesterday.

3) Cubs utilityman man-PH Lenny Harris recorded his 1000th career hit.

After having 11 consecutive years with a negative RCAA, Harris forgot that the first figure in his RCAA total was supposed to be negative, when he had a 3 RCAA/.766 OPS season with the 2002 Brewers. He's got his memory back this year, hitting .270 SLG, .280 OBA, .551 OPS, -5 RCAA in his first 44 games. Harris has a .672 career OPS, compared to his league average of .745, and -111 RCAA in 1697 games.

While Harris holds the record for most career hits by a pinch hitter, that hides the fact that, not only is he a bad hitter, he's also no better when he's pinch hitting. Actually, he's a little worse, as he came into the year with a .670 career pinch hitting OPS and he's off to an excellent star at patheticness with a .269 OPS in first 19 PH PA in 2003.

Harris moved into the top 5 in that always vital category of worst career OPS, vs. the league average, by a NL lefty with at least 1000 career hits (since 1900)--

Code:
OPS DIFF PLAYER LEAGUE H 1 Tony Womack -.097 .680 .777 1040 2 Don Blasingame -.076 .673 .749 1030 3 Lenny Harris -.073 .672 .745 1000 4 Omar Moreno -.072 .650 .722 1097 5 Mickey Morandini -.060 .698 .759 1193 6 Johnny Edwards -.053 .664 .717 1106 7 Bill Virdon -.044 .696 .740 1596 8 Bill Bruton -.041 .715 .756 1126 9 Ivy Wingo -.039 .663 .701 1039 10 Don Mueller -.037 .717 .754 1248

4) Redsox pitching coach Tony Cloninger will take a leave of absence, so he can focus his attention on fighting an aggressive form of bladder cancer.

5) The Padres sent P Jaret Wright to the minors when they activated CF Mark Kotsay from the DL.

After 6.52 ERA/-6 RSAA (7 G/GS) and 15.71 ERA/-23 RSAA (8 G/6 GS) seasons with the Indians, Wright has a 8.90 ERA/-17 RSAA in his first 26 games. He has a 5.69 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.69, and -62 RSAA in 124 games.

6) The Tigers moved Dean Palmer from the 15 to the 60 day DL, when they needed room on the 40 man roster for Warren Morris.

7) Mets P John Franco became the 8th pitcher to pitch in 1000 games.

Code:
GAMES 1 Jesse Orosco 1214 2 Dennis Eckersley 1071 3 Hoyt Wilhelm 1070 4 Kent Tekulve 1050 5 Dan Plesac 1026 6 Lee Smith 1022 7 Goose Gossage 1002 8 John Franco 1000

8) The Rockies sent P Vic Darensbourg to the minors and will activate P Nelson Cruz from the DL today.

Darensbourg cleared waivers and was removed from the 40 man roster. After 4.25 ERA/0 RSAA and 6.14 ERA/-12 RSAA seasons with the Marlins, Darensbourg has a 0.00 ERA/1 RSAA in his first 3 games. He has a 4.96 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.38, and -22 RSAA in 274 games.

9) Royals 1B Mike Sweeney had X-rays on his left wrist, which were negative, and he's day to day.

After 28 RCAA/.916 OPS and 39 RCAA/.979 OPS seasons, Sweeney's hitting .509 SLG, .426 OBA, .934 OPS, 13 RCAA in his first 51 games. He has a .884 career OPS, compared to his league average of .776, and 121 RCAA in 863 games.

10) A second opinion on Indians P Jason Bere confirmed that he is going to have season ending shoulder surgery.

POSTING TIP FOR THE DAY: When composing a post, think about what you would say if the intended recipient was an individual who was actually sitting just two feet in front of you, in person, rather than just some far away and anonymous audience who only can identify you as text on a PC screen - - and then write your post in that manner. It makes for remarkable and sincere discourse.
