Rumors are just rumors, until they become fact, but this surprises me.

"CINCINNATI – The Reds may be on the verge of dealing two-time Gold Glove second baseman Pokey Reese to the Yankees, a source close to the situation told the Cincinnati Post on Thursday."
Great, I think Reese has kids by three different women, none ever his wife. He'll make Mickey Rivers look like Booby Richardson. The Hoochie Mammas in the Bronx will bleed him for his last dollar in paternity suits. |

Reese is Springer material. That's not a good match with the NY media/stage.

ESPN has revised their story to include:
"However, sources close to the Yankees deny that the team is trying to acquire Reese for Soriano. In fact, the Yankees rejected the same deal 10 days ago, sources told ESPN's Peter Gammons. The Yankees believe Soriano will, in time, be a Gold Glove second baseman, albeit maybe not as skilled as Reese." Hmmm, "sources close to the Yankees" usually means the Big Stein himself and "Gammons" well - - not exactly to fountains of truth there, huh? Guess time will tell? |

I been thinking about this and here is my theory.
Say the trade goes down. Having a proven 2nd baseman in Reese gives the Yanks room to move Knobluach out of the org to a team in need of a DH. Reese can bat lead off although he's better suited lower in the order. O Henry and Justice platoon in LF. The question then becomes what do you get back for Knobby?

Initially I was intrigued this rumor. Pokey Reese (personal life aside) is a darn good player. Two years ago this guy was a deal breaker in a Griffy deal, now all of the sudden (fact that he makes 3.2 mil this year, arbitration again next year) they want to move him for Soriano?
It makes you shake your head. It is not that I am adverse to moving Soriano, I would move him in a second if the right deal comes along (Jose Paniagua, Felix Rodriguez, Scott Williamson), but I do not want to move him for esentially a more polished version of a less talented player. That is essentially what Reese is. Right now, more polished (even though he doesn't walk one bit either, 1 in 67AB's this season), but Soriano has the higher upside and that has to be taken into account. Soriano can someday hit .300 with 40+ steals, 20 out, etc. |

What I intended to say, more politely, is to be careful with estimating potential. It may never be realized.

Dat's baseball Willy - - yesterday's untouchable is today's new kid on the (trading) block. Years ago, Big Stein called Otto Velez and Scottie McGregor "the family jewels" - and he swore they could not be let go. Well, Otto went in the expansion draft to the Blue Jays - and McGregor (along with Tippy Martinez) went to the O's in a bad deal. Things always change. |

Buzz - - if the Yanks could have moved Knobby as a DH, it would have been done 6 weeks ago - and, BTW, Justice and H-Rod are both LH hitters...........please move to the "back of the bodega" ![]() |

In about two days on this sight I have come to the conclusion that you and I do not agree on too much.
![]() Anyway that is a good thing. I hate talking sports with someone who has all the same views as I have. So what is your deal? Obviously you are a Rangers fan (so you have at least some good taste) . But what are you a Met fan, Yankee fan, Red Sox Fan, what. I need an angle on you. |

Big contract for a DH, I realize. Maybe they did ask for too much, but, with Reese, they have wiggle room to need less back.
