Default Sorenstam playing with the boys

Annika has accepted an invitation to the Colonial, where she'll be the first woman to play against the men since Babe Zaharias.

http://sports.espn.go.com/golf/story?id=1506978

Two things I wonder about - first, how will she do? I really have no idea. She obviously has a great short game, but how much will her lack of power hurt her? At least she was smart about the course she chose.

Secondly, is this good for the game? Again, I have mixed feelings about this, but it will no doubt be interesting (or at least as interesting as golf can be).

If a tourney wants to invite a woman, I have no problem.

You beat me to this.

I'm going to look forward to it, because Annika is a personal favorite of mine...I mean to dominate your sport like that and still look good? A+ in my book.

I think Sorenstam can do just fine. She hasn't done this particular course before but I think she's going to adjust well enough. And even though she's not a big hitter, she can make up for is with accuracy and other fundamentals. Last year, she had an average drive of 266 yards, and while that puts her on the low end of the scale, keep in mind there are good golfers that have very similar averages.

Thus, she can make a good transition...I'm hoping she breaks par.

I don't have a problem with it, either.....hope she plays well, or it'll look something like Margaret Court getting pounded by Bobby Riggs all over again......

I think it will probably be a good thing for the sport of golf and the LPGA in particular.

She picked a good course to try, a longer course would have put her at a severe disadvantage.

There was no one better than the Babe. She made the cut too.

I just want her to make the cut. Anything after that is gravy.

She will have a tough time against the boys but it could be entertaining.

What he said.

She's gonna be hurt off the tee, and that's no small factor even for a so-called "short" course. After that, she'll be fine.

What I'D love to see is what Babe Zaharias would do against the boys today, with the training and equipment they have nowadays. She was a great all-around athlete, maybe the best ever of the female persuasion.

I think she'll be competitive for a top 30 finish, at best

Corey Pavin carved a nice career without hitting long. While it can be a factor, I believe in accuracy and placement more than length. Otherwise, the mongos on the tour would win 'em all.

And on the other end of the spectrum:

http://sports.espn.go.com/golf/story?id=1511394

Now that Annika is going to play in a PGA event, a former Canadian Tour male golfer is going to try and qualify for the U.S. Women's Open.

I'm not commenting. This sounds like something that would be made into a lousy comedic movie.

I'll comment on it: I think it's a great idea for someone who has nothing to lose.

Face it -- the guy can't get past Q-school and he doesn't want to play in Florida or any of the regional tours, so why not? Worst that can happen is they don't let him play with the big girls, and he can always keep plugging away trying to get his PGA card.

I seriously doubt he'd raise a fuss if they don't let him play, since he'd be branded a major pain.

He's got a good equal opprotunity case if Anika plays PGA and the LPGA excludes him.

Terribly politically incorrect of you to bring this up - most people have completely forgotten this match. The Court match occurred several months before the match against King. Many observers felt Riggs finally "grew old" between the two matches
