Post crying and whining

From http://baseball.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=bos

Quote:
Pedro: Changes necessary
According to an Associated Press report out of his native Santo Domingo, Pedro Martinez wants some major changes or he won't be back with the Red Sox. "I don't want gossip, nor the small wars of the past season. There will be some changes in Boston or there won't be Pedro Martinez," Martinez is quoted as saying, according to the Boston Globe. "I want to win and everyone knows it. We have a team with the quality to win, but we were affected by injuries and some other things, which I expect will disappear." The team's ace left the team in September after a confrontation with new manager Joe Kerrigan, in which he tore off his jersey and threw it in Kerrigan's direction. He met with general manager Dan Duquette the next day, and was gone by the end of the week.

Doesn't this guy have a contract? I get grumpy when ballplayers sign long-term deals and then threaten to repudiate them if some condition of theirs isn't met. I don't have a lot of respect for anything about Martinez other than his changeup. He's evolved into a consummate whiner. Can you imagine the outcry if he refuses to honor his contract?

Default This story has been cleaned up a bit.....

Remember, that the story was originally written in Spanish and the translation was much rougher. It also talked about Pedro playing after his option year and if he would continue with the Red Soxs. Then comes the quote about changes or no Pedro. I will see if you think the same, let me dig and try to find it....hmmm I think it is a Wednessday story.

Leave the Twins alone. Break up the Red Sox!

I think you are suggesting here that what Pedro said wasn't as bad as it sounded? If so, I'd like to see what you have - so far all I've seen is repeats of the "changes or no Pedro" story. This guy, with two years left on his contract, has been whinging for a renegotiation for the last two. I'm sorry, but I just don't like that. I didn't like it when it was Belle, Sheffield, or whomever - that's the risk a player takes signing a long-term deal, in exchange for the security of knowing you can miss half a season - as Pedro did - and not wind up making the major league miniumum the next year. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

Amen. Once you sign, that's it. Honor the contract. Maybe that type of ethics doesn't exist in baseball, but it should. Me and my ivory tower are in a dream land. If the players want flexibility, sign only one year deals.
