Default PNC Park Trip Report--game of May 9.

Made my first visit to PNC Park this year (since the planned Opening Day trip was rained out). The place is just a magnificent park to watch a ball game. Our seats were in the top deck this time, in RF in foul territory, Section 307 Row J, $10 seats. There just isn't a bad seat in the house, as these seats were all angled toward 2B, offered an unobstructed view of the field, and a very pleasant angle on the action. I could see everything happening on the field, the Jumbotron, and had a reasonable view of both bullpens as well.

I scouted Curt Schilling, the game's winner, in another thread. I'll put a few random comments here: Brian Giles did not look quite ready yet. He did not hit the ball with any authority.....Tony Womack did not appear, Alex Cintron instead started at SS for the D'backs....Reggie Sanders is one of the streakiest hitters I have ever seen. He looked completely clueless tonight....Lloyd McClendon got thrown out early in the game on a disputed call at 1B when Lofton was doubled off the bag....All-Star ballots were available, but there was no organized effort to distribute or collect them, just the boxes around the stadium.....saw Manny Sanguillen at his barbecue pit behind the CF stands.....parked in the downtown area and walked across the 6th Street brid....er, the Roberto Clemente Bridge to the park.....the Fort Pitt Bridge out of town (heading south) is closed, so traffic after the game was badly bottlenecked.....tonight was Baseball Card night. Fans got a specially packed set of cards, different companies, usually at least one star, plus a Pirates 2003 schedule. I got a Roy Oswalt Topps 2003 card in my pack.

It was a great night at the ballpark. I'm beat.

Default Awesome

Other than Wrigley, PNC is my favorite ballpark. Yes, better than Camden. I haven't been to PacBell (this summer!) or Safeco.

The only bad thing I've heard abopuyt PNC is that the press box is really far from the field. If that's the worst thing about a ballpark, then I need to check it out.

BBQ pits need seem to be the trend at newer park. They have Orlando Cepeda's Carribean BBQ at Pacbell. They have a chicken dish there that is out of site.

Sorry, no camera. Neither my brother-in-law nor I has a digital, and we didn't bring the regular type either.

PNC is a great park. Upper Deck section 316/317 can't be beat...right behind home plate, you can see everything...like them batter than the field level seats. Just a great place to watch a ballgame...view of the city is nice and walking over the Clemente Bridge before the game gives it a special touch

I really liked PNC when I was there last year. I haven't watched a game at Camden or Jacobs yet, but PNC and PacBell are neck and neck behind Wrigley and ahead of Fenway or Yankee Stadium. I sat in field boxes between the bases and within the first 30 rows at both ballparks. I think PNC has the superior overall design, and that I'd probably like a game from the cheap seats better there than PacBell. But PacBell is probably a slightly better overall experience for the casual baseball fan.

Thanks, metsfan. We're going there next month and I'll take you up on your suggestion of seats.

If you get the chance, come visit the Jake. You'll be glad you did!

Any in-stands discussions about Kevin Young's recent critical comments about the Pittsburghers commitment to their team?

This deserves it's own thread if people have comments about it.

I am going to visit PNC on the 21st of June. If it is as good as you guys have said it is then it should be a great time.

it is hard to admit, but pnc does shame pacbell. it is an amazingly pretty site.
that said, is there a baseball fan in this forum?
the abortions that hok ("we're not fans--we design multiplexes!") perpetuate on fans, is almost actionable.
every seat, in every park--minor & major--that they've designed, is oriented toward a spot 40 feet behind second base.
poof on what is going on--you want to entertained.
as a fan, i prefer the cleveland park & by far, the old baltimore field. in pnc, i feel stan kasten's undying words, ("i don't want to see fans miling"), but it is a beautiful, and human sized, setting.
