1) The players union is proposing that the playoffs be expanded by adding a couple of more wild card teams and then giving the top 2 teams in each league a bye in the first round.

If the object here is to outdumb bud, then this idea is a clear winner.

2) The Cubs designated P Alan Benes for assignment, when they activated P Antonio Alfonseca from the DL.

After pitching in just 16 games in the past 2 years, Benes is off to a 2.16 ERA/1 RSAA start in his first 3 games. He has a 4.38 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.25, and -11 RSAA in 111 games.

3) The BlueJays sent P Jason Kershner to the minors and will call up P Brian Bowles today. Kershner was removed from the 40 man roster, after he cleared waivers.

After having a 4.88 ERA/-2 RSAA in 25 games with the Padres and BlueJays, as a 25 year old rookie in 2002, Kershner's off to a 10.80 ERA/-3 RSAA start in his first 5 games.

Bowles had a 3.42 ERA/3 RSAA in 19 games with the 2001-02 BlueJays.

4) With there being speculation that Whitesox GM Jerry Manuel's job is in danger, GM Kenny Williams gave him a vote of confidence.

5) The Royals will activate P Jeremy Affeldt from the DL before today's game, which he'll start.

After having a 4.64 ERA/5 RSAA as a 23 year old rookie in 2002, Affeldt's off to a 5.12 ERA/-2 RSAA start in his first 4 starts.

6) Dodgers P Darren Dreifort had a MRI on his right knee yesterday, which showed no damage, and he's expected to make his next start, which is Saturday.

Dreifort, who's only had 2 years with a positive RSAA in his previous 7 seasons, is off to a 3.41 ERA/5 RSAA start in his first 6 starts. He has a 4.34 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.42, and =20 RSAA in 210 games.

7) Angels CF Darin Erstad, who is on the DL, is having problems with his hamstring and the team is concerned he could be out for about another 5 weeks. But, according to BP's Will Carroll, it's more likely that the extremely overrated player will be able to return in a couple of weeks.

Uh ... gee ... thanks, sir. Really. From a man in your position of power, respect, ability, and stability, that really means something.

(Notice no comment on two GMs/no managers - till now)
