Exclamation NHL to take over Sabres

http://www.espn.go.com/nhl/news/2002/0618/1396206.html

The NHL is taking over the Buffalo Sabres, in order to protect the franchise from the mess with Rigas and Adelphia. The league is going to look for local ownership of the Sabres.

I don't know how the league can protect them from creditors if they are worth less than they owe the creditors.

Interesting. But what happens if Adelphia goes bankrupt?

Not having gone through a bankrupcy, I don't know what happens in that case.

I just hope that they find local ownership. Preferably, I'd like someone who's willing to spend some money. They're in a tough market, being so close to the free-spending and incredibly popular Leafs, and they're completely overshadowed by them.

They've had some good talent on that team over the past decade, but they've had to make some tough decisions based on finances.

Maybe the Montreal Expos and Buffalo Sabres can be merged to form one franchise which uses the same players to compete in both sports - that would generate some cost savings.

You'd have to make a trade for Chris Drury and Tom Glavine to make this plan work at all. Trade Vlad for Larry Walker and you are on your way.

I hope this isn't the first step to moving the Sabres somewhere else. I still remember the pain from the sabres loosing the Stanley Cup a few years ago on a game 7 overtime goal that should have been disallowed.

Oh, no, don't tell me you Sabres fans are still not over that goal by the Stars.

Although I despise the Sabres - growing up in Southern Ontario, I hated Toronto and Buffalo - I would hate to see them leave. Buffalo deserves that team, as they've given some good support to a team that hasn't always been great. They're a small-market team, but they've done well considering.

And you can't move a team that gave us the French Connection line!

If Adelphia were to go bankrupt, depending on what kind of bankruptcy (there are multiple options) the shares of the team that they own could be auctioned to the highest bidder. Or they could choose to reorganize, and hold onto their stake, but I would guess they would sell.

I haven't gotten over the missed field goal by Scott Norwood yet either!

Hey James...

I'm still hold a nasty 4-way grudge between Michael "Lucky Shot" Jordan, John "Lucky Drive" Elway, Rich "Wide Right" Karlis, and Craig "Freaking" Counsell.

None of my nicknames ever catch on though.

Seriously though, does anyone know what the status of Adelphia and the Sabres are? They just got a shiny new arena, no? I'd imagine they've got one of those nearly impossible to break leases.

They can break it if they declare bankruptcy.
